Frames of Impact: 12 years of impact, learning and more action
Today, Paradigm Initiative celebrates the 12th work anniversary of its Senior Programmes Officer, Ihueze Nwobilor. As we celebrate Ihueze’s anniversary, he shares one of the many moments that best reflect his time in the organisation and what it means for him.
“This photo captures one of the moments that best reflect my journey at Paradigm Initiative. This was at the Launch of the Digital Rights and Inclusion Board Learning (DRIBLE) Board game campus tour at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. I was facilitating conversations on digital inclusion and helping participants connect complex policy, digital rights, and digital trust and safety issues with practical realities. It represents what the last 12 years at PIN have meant to me—creating spaces where learning, innovation, and community engagement intersect.
From programme implementation to policy advocacy and capacity building, I have been privileged to contribute to PIN’s mission of connecting underserved communities with digital opportunities while advancing digital rights. This moment reminds me that impact is often built through dialogue, collaboration, and shared experiences. Looking back, I am grateful for the growth, friendships, and opportunities to serve, and I remain inspired to continue shaping a more inclusive digital future for Africa.”

Frames of Impact: Four years of purpose-driven communication
Today, Judith Ogutu, Senior Communications Manager at PIN celebrates her fourth year as a PINnovator. As we celebrate with her, Judith reflects on the power of communication to inform, connect, and influence change both in Africa and beyond:
“My journey at Paradigm Initiative started in July 2022. Upon joining, I had to step out of my comfort zone. With a background in print journalism, I had been mostly behind the scenes for years, where my name would always precede me. My byline introduced me first. I joined PIN straight from a strategic advisory firm, where I worked mostly as a strategic communications consultant behind the scenes. PIN rewired and upset the status quo.
In this photo, I was taking on my first assignment in Zimbabwe- moderating a session at a Digital Rights Academy for journalists. This served as an introduction to the limelight. In addition to what I do best- steering communications around our impactful work, I now moderate sessions, give opening remarks, speak at panels and give keynote addresses.
Looking back, it has been an honour to see the impact we have achieved as an organisation through the communication we put out. Our media coverage and reach have grown tremendously, expanding across Africa and beyond. We have produced six films, four of them award-winning. Our social media engagement within our growing community has become more vibrant. We have built trust among our key stakeholders, including funders, partners, volunteers, supporters, our board and team.
Besides the amazing work, I have also seen remarkable growth among the team I lead, mentor and coach. This has definitely been an eye-opening and impactful journey, and there are definitely more heights to be scaled.”

Recap: Digital Rights Academy, Zambia
Yesterday, we partnered with Bloggers of Zambia to convene stakeholders from across the media space for a Digital Rights Academy, a timely initiative focused on strengthening digital security skills and knowledge ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The goal was to counter harmful narratives around digital rights and freedom of expression, while also addressing the power imbalances that often shape online spaces. Participants were equipped with practical tools and best practices to protect their digital presence, safeguard sensitive information, and ensure responsible, secure communication before, during, and after the elections.
As the digital space becomes increasingly central to civic participation, building resilience among media actors is vital for their security and the integrity of the work they do.

Frames of Impact; The work behind moments that matter
Today marks Venessa Ndikintum's first anniversary as a PIN team member. As we celebrate her, she shares one photo from her time on the team and what it means to her:
“This photo was taken during the closing ceremony of DRIF, and it captures a moment I am truly proud of in my first year at Paradigm Initiative. By the time this picture was taken, I was honestly just relieved. Relieved that everyone had arrived safely, navigated visa processes, airport pickups, hotel check-ins, and all the moving parts that come with a major international event.
My work is not always the most visible, but the Digital Rights and Inclusion Forum (DRIF) reminded me how much thoughtful planning contributes to creating experiences that are successful and memorable. PIN has taught me that impact does not only happen on stage.
Sometimes it lives in the emails, the follow-ups, and the quiet 'how was your flight' check-ins. One year in, I am grateful for the growth, the team, and every behind-the-scenes moment that makes it all worthwhile.”

Every child deserves to be safe online.
As more Nigerian children go online to learn, play, and connect, they also face growing risks like cyberbullying, online grooming, and harmful content. This is why PIN assembled civil society, government, child protection experts, and other stakeholders to chart a better path for child online safety in Nigeria.
We believe protecting children online is not about restricting the internet, but about making the internet safer for them.

Don't be surprised if the Presidency itself doesn't exist.
If they explain Nigerian politics to you, and you understand it, you got the wrong description.
“To start Akara business doesn't take a lot of money. To start roasting corn and kuli-kuli doesn't take much. We didn't give them a loan, we gave them a grant. We have encouraged Nigerians as best as we could.”

Thanks to our Life skills, ICTs, Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship (LIFE) Legacy initiative, hundreds of thousands of young people from underserved communities have been able to come face to face with their dreams.
What began as a vision to bridge the digital divide in a single community has grown into a movement that has empowered hundreds of thousands of young Africans with digital skills, access, and hope.
For us, the true legacy of LIFE is not only in the programmes we run, but also in the barriers that are broken every day and the generations that will continue to benefit from the opportunities created.

In 2019, I was invited to speak about digital inclusion and @paradigmhq’s work at TED Salon New York. Then COVID happened. Digital exclusion became so real and the TED team got me to urgently record this during the pandemic: https://t.co/Sx5j7sKDIV
Finally got to watch it today.
Today for digital rights in Zimbabwe!
From June 24-25, participants at our Digital Rights Academy will strengthen their understanding of digital rights, digital security, and online safety while gaining practical tools to navigate an increasingly complex digital landscape.
Participants include journalists, civil society actors, young lawyers, students, and representatives of key institutions working to advance human rights and access to justice.

Being a Life-Long Student
"The thing about building a Pan-African institution is that you will invariably wear many hats. It often feels like you have to present as an expert even when you feel like an amateur. It is the cost of breaking new ground."
In his latest excerpt from the book, The Paradigm Initiative Story: A Work in Progress, 'Gbenga Sesan reflects on mentorship, leadership, and the lessons he learned from media freedom advocate Edetaen Ojo, from the importance of preparation and process to the value of staying curious, no matter how far you have come.

Shame on you, SSS.
Is Tinubu a criminal? If he is not, could he kindly use legal means to defend himself?
Your services are urgently required for the safety and security of Nigeria, not to intimidate citizens who express opinion in a democracy.
This is quite a show of shame!
RE: 'REMAND' OF OMOYELE SOWORE
The Department of State Services (DSS) has noted concerns of some citizens over events at a Federal High Court in Abuja on 22nd June 2026, leading to the remand of Omoyele Sowore in Kuje Prison. Of more concern, is the scene depicting Sowore's altercation with an official of Custodial Center and a seeming scuffle with operatives of the Service. Although at the end of the saga, he curiously opted for a DSS vehicle instead of that of the Correctional Service, the Director General has ordered an immediate investigation into the alleged conduct of Service operatives involved in the incident. Notwithstanding, it is expedient to set the records straight.
On 25th August 2025, Omoyele Sowore, made a post on his personal X and Facebook handles, wherein he stated "this criminal actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE CORRUPTION in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly." Thus, disparaging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR and embelishing his statement. Rather than resort to arrest, the Service, in a letter dated 4th September, 2025 demanded a retraction within one week. This is in line with the practice of the current DG-DSS to resolve such issues without use of force, failure to which it may resort to judicial interpretation.
Specifically, in the case of Prof. Pat Utomi's Shadow Government, the Service sought a judicial explanation even without any arrest or invitation. The Federal High Court thereafter declared the Shadow Government unconstitutional. Also, the false publications on Lagos State House of Assembly invasion by Service operatives and a similar report by Order Paper, alleging a barricade of the National Assembly Complex, the Service demanded a public apology rather than apprehend anyone in both instances. It is on record that, DSS withdrew all charges immediately after the defaulting media houses made a redress.
In the same vein, two Service operatives sought judicial redress and won their cases against SERAP for defamation and libel on their false alarm of an invasion by the said operatives. In this case also, the Court delivered judgment in favour of the said operatives. In all these, the Service maintained its hygiene and adherence to rule of law.
Therefore, in line with SSS Instrument No. 1 of 1999, made pursuant to NSA Act of 1986, the Service filed charges against Sowore for contravening section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention etc) Amendment Act, 2024 in a suit FHC/ABJ/CR/481/2025 seeking a judicial interpretation of his right or otherwise to disparage and cyberbully the President. The public may wish to note that, Sowore was granted bail on self-recognition even without a surety at the commemcement of the trial, a position the Service did not oppose and even Sowore applauded the development.
From the foregoing, it is clear the issues that led to his bail revocation and subsequent remand were entirely premised on the court processes, as the Service neither arrested nor opposed his bail. DSS therefore assures of sustained priority to professionalism, with emphasis on civility in its operations, even at the face of provocation.
