@LucyP23_oldie@HelenMackie27@GMB This is exactly it. People are retiring later. So the jobs that should be available are not. Also some people are working 2 jobs to survive- a job that otherwise would be done probably by a young person.
@HelenMackie27@GMB Depends where you live. Do graduates who have spent thousands of pounds on their teaching degree or paramedic training want to do car washing? The experience gained often needs to be related these days else you don't get shortlisted.
@goodwin_ju12864@GMB And then the kids can't get a placement because there are not enough available. Online applications many are fake or people get ghosted or AI throws you out of the process.
@katemackay55@GMB What makes you think they aren't? There are degrees and courses in AI, social media, digital marketing, computer science etc attracting thousands of people. Go on LinkedIn and see how many people are applying for 1 job. 1980 v 2026 ?
@floozyc@GMB Reduction in shops on high street, restaurants where are the jobs? AI replaces till staff. Work outsourced to other countries for cheap labour. People working longer not freeing up jobs. People working 2 jobs to survive. Not everyone is lazy or on benefits by choice.
@FlatToTheMatt@GMB Not everyone will/can go down the self employment route. The point is about the lack of basic jobs they used to be able to apply for in retail, restaurants, pubs etc. AI, people working longer and economy has caused this.
@miriamkirkp@GMB Many youngsters are trying this or have tried. Speak to many young people you will find they have applied for 100s of jobs paid and unpaid. They have the ethic the jobs are not there.
@GMB My daughter applied for tons of jobs at 16/17. No response from many. She used her swimming skills at 17 to get a PT job as a lifeguard while she studies - otherwise she would still be jobless at 18. Her friends are struggling. They want to earn money but can't get basic jobs.
