One of my reflections after spending time in Buffalo and talking with Americans is how differently some of us hear President Trump’s rhetoric. 🇨🇦🇺🇸

A number of Americans I spoke with essentially said: don’t take the tweets so seriously. He’s trolling. He’s trying to get a reaction. Canadians are taking the bait when we respond.

I understand that perspective, but I think it misses something important.

Sometimes we’re told Trump means exactly what he says. Other times we’re told not to take him literally. It shouldn’t be up to Canadians, allies or anyone else around the world to constantly parse which version of the President we’re listening to. 🤷‍♂️

When you hold the office of President of the United States, your words aren’t simply the words of Donald Trump. They come from the highest office in the country and are heard around the world as the words of the American President. 🌎

That changes their weight.

For Canadians, when the President talks about our country, our sovereignty, our economy or our relationship in inflammatory terms, it is difficult to simply dismiss it as trolling or style.

The office matters. The words matter. And how those words land with your friends and allies matters.

That’s something I’d ask my American friends to be a little more introspective about. 🇺🇸🤝🇨🇦

You may know how you personally interpret Trump — or think you know how to interpret Trump.

The rest of the world has to interpret the President of the United States.

As a Canadian whose roots in this country date back to 1772, I can’t think of a people I would rather share a border with. My wife and I have travelled extensively throughout the US and have many American relatives and friends. If we exclude self-serving politicians on both sides, we would get along just fine.
