BREAKING: The Cost of Renting Receipt
1988 was the last time we had rent controls in England. Since then rents have risen by 1,200%.
If our groceries had risen at the same rate, a standard ten-item shop would cost nearly £120, more than five times what it costs today.
In response, our Chief Executive, Holly Williamson, said:
"Introducing a limit on rent increases would be a major, free cost of living intervention that would help put more money in the pocket of millions of renters across the country.”

If they miss today’s deadline to apply, they will need to start again using the new Section 8 grounds under the Renters’ Rights Act.
Homes are the foundations of our lives, yet rents have spiralled beyond what most people can afford. That’s why we invited people to write to Angela Rayner, urging her to bring rent controls back on the agenda 🧵👇
It’s disappointing to hear Angela Rayner ruling out rent controls. They’re the only real solution to the biggest problem facing private renters, the cost of rent.

📢 Big news: We are delighted to welcome Holly Williamson as our new Chief Executive, succeeding Ben Twomey.
A private renter herself, Holly brings a decade of policy, campaigning & legal experience to the role, ready to keep fighting for renters’ rights across the UK. 🏠
Great analysis by @genrentuk: a loaf of bread would cost nearly £7 if supermarket prices had risen in line with private rents during my lifetime.
Can't wait for the usual suspects to tell us again how there's no crisis of housing affordability though.

Stark stats from @genrentuk today, which illustrate Burnham's biggest cost-of-living problem:
At £1442, the average monthly rent in England is thirteen times higher now than it was in 1988, when it was £111.
A 500g pack of cheddar cheese would cost £19.50 compared to £4.31 if the cost had risen at the same rate.
A whole chicken would cost £23.79, etc.
Some people will argue that rent controls are the answer. The evidence is mixed. There is now no straightforward fix to this issue. But it has a huge impact on living standards and, of course, the Housing Benefit bill!
Renters have new protections from unreasonable rent rises, excessive demands for upfront rent, and bidding wars.
We've looked at what these mean at a time when rent rises have slowed, and how useful they'll be the next time rents shoot up

BREAKING: @AngelaRayner has been appointed as the new Secretary of State for Housing, the department which oversees private renting policy.
We look forward to working with her to make sure all renters have the secure and affordable home they need.
LATEST: Our latest analysis of government data finds that Black renter households are 2x as likely to have faced homelessness as a result of a S21 eviction compared to the rest of the population, shining a spotlight on the racial inequality in UK housing.

Letting agents are bullying tenants into leaving without serving a Section 8 notice, even claiming an eviction for sale counts against them for future rentals.
It could cost the agent a £7,000 fine.

The government needs to scrap these insurance-backed deposit schemes. It would become harder for fraudsters to run sophisticated scams, and harder for landlords to pressure renters into accepting unfair deductions.

A scammer posing as a letting agent went as far as registering with a deposit protection scheme and insuring the tenants deposit before doing a runner with their money.
