More than twenty-five (25) years of unifying civil society organisations advocating for the right to free, quality, inclusive public #education for all.
The 2026 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings have kicked off in Bangkok, Thailand (12-18 October), but two critical issues are missing from the agenda - education and debt reforms.
The meetings opened with a flagship World Bank event, 'Small AI: More and Better Jobs', where speakers emphasised the importance of education, lifelong learning, higher education, and on-the-job training in harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence. https://t.co/nDyfNsnpLk
But here's the question โ How can we talk about the future of education without addressing the financial crisis threatening its very foundations?
Across developing countries, mounting debt burdens, austerity measures, and fiscal constraints are squeezing public education budgets, deepening inequalities, and putting the right to quality education further out of reach for millions.
๐ท AI may be transforming the future of work, but without adequately funded public education systems, who will benefit from that future, and who will be left behind?
As the European Network on Debt and Development (Eurodad) highlights, despite growing concerns about debt distress, meaningful action on debt reform is unlikely at this year's meetings.

GCE calls for education financing and debt justice to be central to global economic discussions. Investing in AI and future jobs cannot come at the expense of foundational learning, strong public education systems, and the right to education for all.
GCE is participating in the Annual Meetings, represented by Cecilia "Thea" Soriano, Campaign and Communications Manager, to advocate for education justice and equitable financing.
The future of education cannot be built on underfunded foundations.

As the 2026 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings unfold in Bangkok, GCE joined the International Peopleโs Assembly, held alongside the meetings, strengthening alliances with movements fighting for debt justice, tax justice, economic justice, and quality public services for all.
At a session of the 'Our Future is Public' (OFIP) campaign, facilitated by GCEโs Cecilia โTheaโ Soriano, David Archer of ActionAid and Ingo Ritz of GCAP presented the Santiago Declaration on Public Services and the OFIP campaign. The participants raised concerns about the future of public services, including:
- Exclusion and inequality, particularly the barriers faced by refugees and other marginalised communities in accessing essential public services.
- Growing private sector influence, which threatens the ability of governments to independently shape and deliver public services in the public interest.
- The expanding role of Big Tech and AI in education, healthcare, agriculture, and other essential services, raising urgent questions about data sovereignty, privacy, public accountability, and the responsibilities of technology providers and funders.
The Assembly also reinforced calls for a UN Framework Convention on Sovereign Debt, recognising the urgent need to address debt burdens that divert public resources away from education and other essential services.
Meanwhile, Thai activists and grassroots organisations took to the streets of Bangkok to protest IMF and World Bank policies affecting the rights, livelihoods, and dignity of communities and Indigenous Peoples.
The fight for education justice cannot be separated from the fight for debt justice, economic justice, and strong public services. GCE stands in solidarity with movements worldwide demanding policies that put people, rights, and public interests before profits.

Resist, Reclaim, Rise Up for System Change!
This is the call of the International Peopleโs Assembly, where activists from around the world gathered in Bangkok from October 12 to 13 to challenge the impact of IMF-WB policies and decisions on the lives of communities and peoples.
On top of the agenda of the Assembly is the debt and climate crisis. Ahead of the IMF-WB annual meeting, the โfrontline nations call for financial liberation from the debt traps.โ Debt and climate activists cited that โClimate-vulnerable countries spend nearly 25 times more on debt servicing than on climate action. In total, the Global South drains roughly US$8.8 trillion in debt servicing to Northern creditors, dwarfing the US$39 billion provided in grant-based climate finance by nearly 225 to 1.โ

GCE joins the debt justice movement's call for debt cancellation in climate-vulnerable countries to enable governments to sustainably fund climate actions and quality public services such as education, health, and social protection.
Peace is more than the absence of war. It is the presence of justice, dignity, and hope.
๐ท What role can art, culture, and education play in building a more peaceful world?
At the 2026 International Day of Peace celebration in Seville, Spain, GCE President Refaat Sabbah explored how creativity and education can help communities overcome conflict, reclaim their identities, strengthen resilience, and rebuild hope.
๐ท โPeace education is fundamentally a lived culture before it becomes an educational subject.โ โ Refat Sabbah
In a world increasingly divided by conflict, displacement, and inequality, his message was a reminder that education must go beyond textbooks and classrooms.
๐ท Schools must be places where children learn to embrace diversity, challenge injustice, resolve differences peacefully, and respect the dignity and rights of others.
Because peace is not simply something we teach. It is something we must practise, protect, and build together.

The Global Campaign for Education stands with teachers worldwide in the fight for their rights and the professionalisation of the teaching profession.
Teachers are the vanguards of learning, critical thinking and discernment for the future. In a world shaped by climate change, conflict, inequality and rapid technological change, teachers do far more than deliver knowledge. They help learners understand complexity, distinguish truth from misinformation, build empathy and solidarity, and develop the knowledge, values and skills needed to shape a better present and future.
Teachers cannot fulfil this role without adequate support. Governments should invest in teacher professionalisation, decent working conditions, fair compensation, social protection, and health and welfare. Teachers are at the forefront of delivering quality education, one of the most essential public services.

The Multiply Possibility high-level event at the UN General Assembly in New York, convened by Italy, Nigeria, and the Global Partnership for Education(GPE), mobilised $3.5 billion in international financing for education.
Headlines:
๐$471 billion in domestic education financing commitments from GPE partner countries, representing a 32% increase in spending by 2030
โ๏ธ $2.1 billion in confirmed and anticipated pledges to GPE from sovereign and private donors.
โ๏ธ $1.4 billion in initial co-financing from development finance institutions, philanthropic organisations, and private sector partners.
These commitments put GPE on course to help improve education for 750 million children by 2030. And the urgency could not be greater: 270 million children and young people remain out of school. This is a strong foundation, but it is not the finish line. More pledges are expected in the months ahead, and sustained advocacy will be critical to turning this momentum into lasting change.

Under Italy and Nigeriaโs leadership, GPE partners stood up for the worldโs best investment: education.
At the #MultiplyPossibility event at #UNGA81, global leaders mobilized $3.5B in funding for education, with GPE partner countries committing $471B in domestic financing.
Investing in education means investing in our shared future.
GCEโs Phumza Luthango is participating in #UNGA81 and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Summit, joining education advocates in calling for stronger political commitment and sustainable financing so that every child, young person, and adult can realise their right to quality education.
@GPforEducation is bringing together global leaders and partners on the sidelines of #UNGA81 to mobilise greater investment and accelerate the transformation of #education systems worldwide. With GPE seeking to mobilise at least US$5 billion to support education across 96 countries, these high-level discussions come at a critical moment for global education financing.
Governments and partners must turn commitments into action and ensure education receives the financing it urgently needs!
