This past year has been filled with huge milestones on our journey to a more sustainable future.
Here are just some of our key moments in this area:
💰 We were awarded a grant of almost £13 million by the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme to help us hit our target of being #NetZero by 2030.
The grant will help towards the cost of installing around 1,300 new solar panels and connecting nine of our buildings to the city's district energy network, reducing our carbon emissions by more than 1,300 tonnes per year: https://t.co/9tvJlumDv4
🌲 Our Peace Garden and Starley Gardens were recognised with two major sustainability awards, the @GreenGowns Award in the category of Nature Positive, and the @GreenFlagAward for Best Climate Adaption.
The Green Flag prize is considered a ‘best of the best’ accolade as only projects to have won prestigious Green Flag Awards earlier in the year are open for consideration.
The Green Gown Awards recognise exceptional sustainability Initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges across the UK and Ireland: https://t.co/KOgEvD9uSZ
🔋 We joined forces with @UGMYogyakarta in Indonesia to explore the creation of a joint laboratory dedicated to reducing electric vehicle battery waste.
This global collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding, aims to promote resource reuse and contribute to sustainable manufacturing practices: https://t.co/EoaWzhWWui
🐰 Our fashion department has shown its commitment to a more ethical industry by not using new animal furs or exotic skins in its students’ work.
This decision was taken by staff to support their passion for sustainability and has been supported by animal charity @PETA: https://t.co/Osu6T0IaWH
🛥️ Our graduate Amel Khsouma has won a prestigious superyacht competition with her sustainable design for a ship that “never dies”.
Amel envisaged a yacht that would remain profitable during its 50 to 60-year charter, and still be enabled to be reconfigured as a museum and cafeteria at the end of its charter: https://t.co/lqzFnoUjTp
⚡️ We will play a key role in a project designed to revolutionise the UK’s ability to manufacture power electronics to enable the shift to sustainable electrification through the £11 million initiative, Project PULSE (Power Electronics Upscale for Localisation and Sustainable Electrification).
Harnessing the our award-winning Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering facility, our researchers will provide instrumental leadership in enhancing manufacturing efficiency and sustainability and incorporating cutting-edge solutions to maximise the project's ambitions: https://t.co/3mZxDrgbzq @ame_u
🤝 This year we formally announced the appointment of Deepak Farmah as Director of the Centre for Advanced Low Carbon Propulsion Systems.
In this role, Deepak is aiming to advance the development of next-generation technologies necessary for a clean and sustainable future: https://t.co/iKv5sQvca6
🌱 We are leading the Clean Futures Catalyst initiative aimed at empowering SMEs across the region to develop and produce cleaner technologies within the transport sector.
The Catalyst forms part of the wider Clean Futures programme led by @CPCatapult, alongside Coventry University and the Black Country Innovative Manufacturing Organisation: https://t.co/uBWxf6Kvf9

The creation of a green oasis in the heart of the city on the site of two of our former buildings has been recognised with two major sustainability awards!
We demolished the Alan Berry and James Starley buildings to make way for the Peace Garden opposite Coventry Cathedral and Starley Gardens in Cox Street, transforming the spine of the campus into a green space for people and wildlife to co-exist.
The @GreenFlagAward is considered a best of the best accolade as only projects to have won prestigious Green Flag Awards earlier in the year are open for consideration.
It not only recognises the creation of a vibrant green space, but also its impact in the fight against climate change.
The @greengowns Awards recognise exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges across the UK and Ireland.
Jamie Whitehouse, our Grounds and Public Realm Manager, said: “These are major awards for the university, as they demonstrate our commitment to creating a sustainable campus that transforms the grey to the green, which is welcoming to people and wildlife.
“The awards recognise the hard work of the university Grounds team and the wider Estates team in creating an exciting, relaxing and stimulating external environment in which to live, study or work.”
The Environmental and Grounds Team works in collaboration with academic departments, such as the @CoventryCAWR and @WKWT to deliver events like bee walks and hedgehog talks for the campus community.
Our Group's Vice Chancellor, Professor John Latham, CBE, said: “Winning these awards is a major achievement for the Group and a validation of our commitment to building a greener, more sustainable campus.
“It underpins our ongoing dedication to working with local and global collaborators to tackle global sustainability challenges, address climate change and create better futures for our communities.”
