#WATCH | Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has defended the state government’s proposal to set a 1-km Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, amid criticism over the proposed buffer.
Explaining the decision, Sarma said the 1-km limit is the baseline under the Supreme Court’s guidelines, and that an ESZ can be extended to up to 3 km in specific areas if required. He said the existing 10-km provision will apply until the state formally defines and notifies the ESZ.
Sarma argued that retaining a 10-km radius around Kaziranga would affect several populated areas, including Kaliabor, Doboka, Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat, and impact thousands of people living around the protected area.
The state Forest Department will now prepare the proposal and send it to the Centre, which will take it forward through the required process before the final ESZ is notified.
