🎉 HKUST Community Celebrates Shenzhou-23 Launch! 🚀
HKUST students, faculty, and staff gathered on campus to watch the live broadcast of the successful launch of the Shenzhou-23 crewed spacecraft. From the moment the rocket lifted off, the whole campus erupted with cheers and applause—making it an unforgettable and deeply proud occasion for everyone.
This mission marks a milestone for Hong Kong’s participation in the national space program, including the first time a Hong Kong payload specialist has joined the national mission. We are excited to see Hong Kong’s talent taking part in this historic step forward in space exploration.
👏 Proud to Support Space Research
Over the years, HKUST research teams have been actively and deeply involved in national space missions, including the development of the MUSICO project— the world’s first lightweight, high-precision synergistic observatory for carbon dioxide and methane emission point sources.
We are especially proud of the expertise and dedication of HKUST researchers and faculty, who helped bring this work closer to real-world space applications.
🌍Looking Ahead
With the payload now in orbit and preparing for further on-orbit operations at China’s Tiangong space station, HKUST will continue working closely with relevant teams to help ensure smooth operations and maximum performance—contributing to national goals for sustainability and carbon reduction.
📣 Congratulations to everyone involved, and a huge shout-out to our community for celebrating this extraordinary moment together!

HKUST Congratulates First Hong Kong Payload Specialist Selected for Shenzhou‑23 Crew
The China Manned Space Agency announced the crew of the Shenzhou-23 mission, which includes Dr. LAI Ka-Ying, a payload specialist from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). Dr. Lai will embark on a mission aboard the Tiangong Space Station. HKUST extends its warmest congratulations and expresses profound pride and excitement at this historic moment.
Prof. Nancy IP, President of HKUST, said: "Dr. Lai Ka-Ying becoming the first Hong Kong payload specialist is not only a historic moment for Hong Kong, but also a powerful testament to the nation's immense trust and deep affection for Hong Kong's young people and scientific talent. The nation's remarkable achievements in space exploration fill Hong Kong people with pride, and it is a great honour for Hong Kong to be able to participate. We are deeply grateful to the nation for its support of the HKSAR. The entire HKUST community wishes Dr. Lai and the team every success and a safe return."
President Ip noted that Hong Kong has long been an active participant in national space endeavors, contributing systems, instruments and technical support for lunar and Mars exploration missions, as well as conducting spaceborne experiments. HKUST's MUSICO project — the only higher-education payload from Hong Kong selected for this round of the Tiangong Space Station program — is a shining example of how Hong Kong's research strength is deeply embedded in the national space development efforts.
The "MUSICO" (Multi‑Spectral Imaging Carbon Observatory) — the world's first lightweight, high-resolution, high-precision synergistic carbon dioxide and methane point-source detector — was successfully launched aboard the Tianzhou-10 cargo spacecraft earlier this month and has now arrived at the Tiangong Space Station. It is the first scientific payload from Hong Kong to be deployed on the Tiangong Space Station, marking a historic breakthrough in the city's high-end aerospace instrument development.

🎵 Erhu + Jazz + Lasers… what does the future of music sound like?
At HKUST’s Shaw Auditorium, internationally renowned erhu virtuoso Guo Gan brought audiences on a breathtaking East-meets-West musical journey. Joined by nine international musicians, he blended the erhu with jazz, rock, tango, Turkish, Arabic, Mongolian, and classical influences, creating a vibrant fusion of cultures and sounds.
Combined with electronic and laser elements, the performance showcased how tradition and technology can converge to create entirely new artistic experiences. Drawing on his philosophy that “all rivers run into the sea,” Master Guo reimagined the erhu as a bridge between cultures, generations, and musical traditions.
As the first Chinese traditional musician to be awarded the French Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres), Master Guo was appointed as Adjunct Professor, Visiting Professor, and Artist-in-Residence at the HKUST School of Humanities and Social Science in 2025. He believes HKUST is the ideal platform to explore new possibilities between music, culture, and technology, while advancing Hong Kong’s role as a global hub for cultural exchange.

HKUST Establishes Biodiversity and Nature-Based Solutions Hub to Drive Education, Research, Innovation, and the New Biodiversity Core Curriculum
HKUST has established the Biodiversity and Nature-Based Solutions Hub under the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR) of the Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) to advance biodiversity education, research, innovation and public engagement, alongside the efforts of its My Climate Risk Hub.
The establishment of the Hub marks a significant milestone in promoting biodiversity education and nature-based solutions (NbS) in Hong Kong. As part of this initiative, HKUST is developing a new biodiversity core curriculum, scheduled for launch in 2027. The curriculum is designed to equip all students with an understanding of Hong Kong’s biodiversity, conservation priorities, and the role of NbS in fostering a more resilient and sustainable city. This underscores that biodiversity is no longer a specialist environmental subject but central element in the city’s climate adaptation, urban development, resilience planning and quality of life. The new curriculum has been welcomed by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) of the HKSAR Government as it aligns closely with the HKSAR Government's Hong Kong Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2035.
“Biodiversity is not only about nature conservation. It is about the systems that sustain life, health, economies and communities,” stated Prof. Alexis LAU, Head of the Division of Environment and Sustainability at HKUST. “By integrating biodiversity into the core curriculum, we emphasize that every student, regardless of whether they study engineering, business, science, medicine, social science or technology, should understand how human prosperity depends on nature, and how their future professional choices can help restore the living systems around us.”
