No doubt not everyone behaves this way. It only takes a visible few to tarnish. Ironic there are so many messages where people believe it’s “ok” to behave any which way in another country.

Disagree. I’ve traveled enough places to know every culture celebrates loudly in its own way.

Italians on winery tours. Russians on Goa beaches at 2 AM. American sports fans. Chinese tour groups with megaphones at the Louvre. Brazilians at Carnival. Spanish at La Tomatina. Nigerians at Owambe parties throwing cash for hours. Saudis at weddings.

The only question is whether they’re hurting anyone.

This is a Gujarati group dancing on the tarmac after landing. They look like they just finished a destination wedding or trip. They’re not blocking the runway. Not hurting anyone. Not being rude to staff. Not damaging property. The plane has already landed.

16 seconds of joy.

Calling this the reason Indians face racism abroad gives racists too much credit. Racism existed before viral videos. Black, Asian, Arab, African, Latino people all face it.

The common factor isn’t loud celebrations. It’s being non-white in white-majority spaces.

The fact of the matter is that the Indians complaining are usually upper-middle-class folks who’ve adopted Western norms of restraint, now embarrassed when working-class or middle-class Indians celebrate in their own way.

That Gujarati family probably saved for years to take this trip. Their joy is genuine.

The reason we get stereotyped is beyond a simple dance.

Visa scams. Fake university rackets. Caste discrimination in Western workplaces. Treating hotel staff badly. Haggling with small businesses on trips.

Loud dancing isn’t on that list.

Confident cultures don’t shrink themselves to avoid racism. Italians don’t apologise for being Italian. Spaniards don’t tone down. We, Indians shouldn’t either.

Let the family enjoy their moment.

A Swiss hotel once displayed a list of special rules exclusively for Indian guests which I personally saw and was appalled.

Today, videos of garba in restaurants, loud conversations in airports, and turning aircraft cabins into picnic spots keep doing the rounds. Even in Davos, an Indian businessman blasted Punjabi music in a club so the whole town could hear it, calling it “soft power” but to everyone’s annoyance.

Japan earned global admiration through their courtesy and civic sense. If India wants to be a true global superpower, the world should remember Indians for its excellence, consideration and respect for others.

Our civic sense seriously needs to be upgraded.
