President Donald Trump announced a major security agreement with Denmark and Greenland today, securing permanent U.S. control over the island’s defense and blocking adversaries like China and Russia from establishing bases there. Local observers are already calling it a strategic masterstroke that could reshape the entire continent.
The deal gives the U.S. expanded military presence in Greenland without full sovereignty transfer, but many see it as the first step toward deeper integration. With Canada facing ongoing trade tensions, talk is growing of our northern neighbor joining as the 51st state. Alberta, however, would get its own referendum to decide its future independently.
A key piece of this Arctic puzzle is tiny Hans Island, located between Greenland and Canada in the Nares Strait. Previously split between Canada and Denmark after years of the lighthearted “Whisky War,” the island now presents an opportunity. Under the new framework, the U.S. should claim full control of Hans Island to establish a clear foothold in the Canadian Arctic.
This move would let America secure the Arctic while allowing southern Canadian population centers—from Windsor through Toronto to Montreal—to remain largely autonomous until integration details are worked out. Northern New York stands to benefit enormously from stronger continental unity and enhanced Arctic security.
The Watertown region has long understood the importance of our northern border. This could be the beginning of a new era for North America.
BREAKING: President Donald J. Trump announces complete and permanent American security control over Greenland, and excludes any adversary from Greenland and the surrounding region.
Honestly, Canada is already basically the 51st state and should just make it official instead of wasting time trying to buddy up with the EU. Look at the numbers: 75% of Canadian exports go straight to the U.S., and NORAD already handles continental defense under one roof. Trying to pivot to Europe makes zero sense. You can’t trade the perks of a shared land border for a massive regulatory maze and high shipping costs an entire ocean away.

Well, Watertown, we may not be getting our traditional Christmas parade this year, but nobody said we couldn’t get a Christmas song out of it. 📷
Presenting “The Grinch Who Stole the Watertown Christmas Parade,” a little North Country Christmas satire from the Watertown Post.
Turn up the volume, enjoy the music video, and have yourself a very Watertown Christmas. 📷📷📷

📰 Watertown had a Watertown Post in 1870. Now you’re reading its next chapter.
The old paper ran steam-powered presses on Arsenal Street. Today, I’m bringing its history into the digital age—and trying to track down the original pages.
As a collector of historical newspapers, this one is personal.
Got an old Watertown Post tucked away in an attic, scrapbook, or family collection? I’d love to see it.
Read the story behind the name at the "Watertown Post" dot com.
