An award-winning online magazine connecting you with stories about science and societies from coasts around the world. 🌊 (“HACK-eye")
In July, we told you that Hakai Magazine will close at the end of December. Since sharing that devastating news, we’ve worked very hard to find a way to keep publishing the coastal journalism you love.
We’re happy to finally announce that our team has a new home!
@hakaimagazine The future of bioGraphic looks bright! But to get there, we need your help to raise $150,000 by December 31 to complete our 2025 budget.

@bioGraphic@calacademy But we need your help:
In order to hit the ground running, we need to raise another $150,000. If you can afford it, please click the link below to donate. No amount is too small!

In January, our senior staff will join @bioGraphic, an award-winning magazine powered by @calacademy. Hakai and bioGraphic are both independent, nonprofit publications committed to telling deeply reported and rigorously accurate stories.

@seafoam_latte@serena_renner@MagAwards We've still got another 5 months of stories coming. And our archive will be available for the foreseeable future.

Hakai is looking for a *man with finance. With funding. Few strings, loves coastal journalism.
*gender does not actually matter in this equation.
(Just saying at @tomrsnow)
This is a huge loss for anyone who appreciates meticulously reported, well-edited, thoughful, original, and engaging #journalism focused on coastal communities and ecosystems. Really no one else quite like @hakaimagazine out there.
The bad news is out: Hakai Magazine is shutting down at the end of 2024. We’re incredibly sad, but our team is proud of the great work we’ve done these past 10 years. We have 5 more months of beautiful and unique coastal stories to come. More info here: https://t.co/iwp4DXTTEt
So, sadly, @hakaimagazine is going out of business ... unless a noble funding agency is found to support them, after all, very quickly. Hopefully! My first contribution to Hakai: Life in the sand. I live #muckDiving

My latest story for the incomparable @hakaimagazine explores what to expect from building offshore wind—and takes apart some of the misinformation around them. A 2024 study shows recent whale deaths are tied to ship strikes and getting tangled with fishing gear
I've written for a lot of people over (ahem) many years.
Writing for @cestmoiLanglois and @judeisabella has been one of the best experiences of them all.
If these two don't wind up finding big $ donors to keep editing, well, then, people with money are just doing it all wrong.
