🚨🧠 Can the oldest operation in neurosurgery be improved?

Burr-hole surgery for chronic subdural haematoma has changed remarkably little for centuries. Yet 1 in 5 patients still require repeat surgery because the haematoma recurs.

MMA embolisation targets the artery thought to drive recurrence, but requires a separate procedure.

Could we achieve the same goal during the original operation?

The #BURRMMA study at @QSNeurosurgery is investigating whether neuronavigation can identify the middle meningeal artery during routine burr-hole surgery, allowing direct coagulation at the time of haematoma evacuation.

These images show the first patient treated in the prospective IDEAL Stage 2a BURR-MMA clinical trial, with direct visualisation of the MMA trunk before bipolar coagulation.
