We need to all learn from these histories to support the universal values of secular democracies. I suspect you and I share more common values than may be apparent in this exchange. I am proud that my reform congregation frankly acknowledged Israeli war crimes in Gaza and brought Palestinian people to share their stories of what they endured after October 7. One must acknowledge these realities even as one acknowledges the mass murders Hamas perpetrated 10/7. That Friedman column opposed further military aid to Israel, which I personally oppose given the war crimes perpetrated with weapons we provided.

I do not identify with the religious origin story as justification to mistreat Palestinians or anyone else. I do identify with Israel as a place of refuge given Jewish history of oppression in the Christian and Muslim worlds. That commands respect, and is the lived family experience of most Jewish Israelis.
