Not your degree. Not your IQ. Not your technical skill. How you communicate is what decides everything.

Here are the rules he drilled into MIT students for 40 years:

Never open with a joke. Your audience isn't ready. Open with a promise of what they'll know by the end that they don't know now.

Cycle your main point 3 to 5 times. Never the same way twice. Each pass from a different angle.

Build a fence around your idea. Tell people what it is NOT so it's never confused with something else.

Use the board, not slides. Writing forces you to slow down. Slowing down forces clarity. Your audience cannot read and listen at the same time.

Ask a question. Wait 7 seconds. The silence isn't awkward. It's processing.

Show the "near miss." Don't just explain what's right. Show what almost looks right but isn't. That contrast is when the brain actually locks it in.

End with a contribution, not a summary. Tell them what you gave them. Not what you said. And never end with "thank you." End with something that lands.
