@ChrystianRaken@rupasubramanya I’m not sure how you can claim “Israel is no longer a democracy”, or that it’s fascist. Even nationalistic.
Those words have distinct meanings, and none of them apply to Israel.
Gaza? Yes.
Iran? Yes.
China? Yes.
Russia? Yes.
@Scott2Alexander@DanFriedman81 Yes, because Hamas refused to give back the hostages.
Are you suggesting that Israel should have just thrown their hands up and walked away?
I’d like to introduce a bill for “Frisian Heritage Month” to celebrate the contributions Frisians have made to Canada.
If you don’t know what Frisian people are, you’re a racist.
🇨🇦🇸🇴 Today, I introduced a private member’s bill that would declare July of every year in Canada as Somali Heritage Month!
I’d like to thank MP @HonAhmedHussen for co-sponsoring this bill with me and for his counsel.
I hope that all MPs will support this legislation.
Canada is home to many Canadians of Somali heritage.
Canadians of Somali descent have left and continue to leave a historic mark on Canada, with contributions that span communities across the country and are reflected in Canada’s economic, political, social and cultural life.
If passed, Somali heritage month would give us an opportunity to celebrate that heritage, the role that Canada has played in supporting Somali Canadians and their contributions to Canada.
Genocide has a very specific definition:
And the war in Gaza, initiated BY Gaza, doesn’t meet the definition of genocide.
People CLAIMNG genocide doesn’t count: and the ICJ has not ruled on this.
The ICJ has ruled that S Africa had the right to allege genocide, and that Gaza had the right to be protected from genocide.
The IAGS is a “pay for your play” organization….
Anyone can join, simply by paying a fee. They are not “experts”. They are activists…"A place for academics, activists, artists, genocide survivors, journalists, jurists, public policy makers, and other colleagues into the interdisciplinary study of genocide, with the goal of prevention".
This is just an organisation open for anyone to be a member, without any required knowledge or expertise needed. The only requirement to join is to pay $30 per year.
The chairman of this organisation is Onur Uraz is from Turkey, which houses Hamas leadership, also has a questionable track record. The way this resolution was adopted was also highly controversial to say at least, but that most of the media left out of the story. The IAGS association had around 500 members at the time of events, but only 28% of these took part in the vote. Critics inside and outside the association argued that this process gave a false impression of broad expert consensus.
Sara Brown, writing in The Forward as an IAGS member, said that only 129 members voted in this mail vote, just being over the lowest threshold of 20%, were 108 supported voted yes.
Finkelsteins premise is that Israel is “illegitimate” because it “displaced” Arabs in ‘48, ignoring the 5 thousand year plus Jewish presence on the land. The 1947 UN Partition Plan proposed two states; Jews accepted it despite receiving fragmented territory, while Arab states and Palestinians rejected it outright and launched war in 1948 to prevent any Jewish state. The resulting refugee crisis stemmed from war was initiated by Arab rejection, with multiple causes (fear, flight, some expulsions)—not a premeditated Zionist master plan.
His whole premise is wrong, and historically inaccurate….
I can go on.
IF the creation of a State, Nation or territory is illegitimate due to displacement, then no State is legitimate.
The majority of displacement by the non-Jewish population of Israel was voluntary: those that stayed make up the 20% Arab/ Muslim population in Israel today: who, as you have been told now TWO TIMES, have equal rights within Israel proper.
Aren’t you forgetting that?
Israel LEFT Gaza in 2005. Israel evacuated ~8,500 settlers from 21 Gaza settlements (plus 4 small ones in the West Bank) and withdrew all military forces. The last Israeli soldier left on September 12, 2005. Homes and infrastructure (like greenhouses) were left behind in hopes Palestinians would use them productively.
(They didn’t: they tore them down, destroyed it all).
Hamas came into power violently the next year in 2006.
This is all well documented: and not just one man’s opinion.
@prem_thakker OR….you don’t know what the hell is going on behind the scenes. No one really does except the players involved. This is the stoopidist game of “telephone” ever.
@FoodProfessor@mindingottawa I’ve never understood why anti-trust laws aren’t enforced in Canada.
Rogers and Shaw should never have merged, either. Saputo? Another one.
