Somewhere along the way, many social sciences divorced themselves from the philosophy of science and adopted positivism in the name of “rigor”
While (post)positivism have their place (and are necessary in some research) they are not the only epistemologies than can be used.
as a mixed method researcher…we don’t talk enough about how you need the kind of nuance provided via interviews, ethnography, focus groups etc…to be able to form and ask the right questions for your quantitative surveys.
The thing I like about qualitative work is that sometimes you gotta spend a little time in the community and take history seriously to get a better understanding of certain demographics. They ain’t filling out that survey. I get in trouble every time I say that, but it’s true.
