@charlesincities This indicates to me that a new deal for major municipalities is long overdue. Municipalities should be their own legitimate level of government with commensurate powers and responsibilities rather than remain creatures of their provinces. Hobbling municipalities helps noone.
How does the City of Vienna build 6,000-7,000 new units of subsidized housing every year?
A 1% tax on all salaries.
A land bank.
And loans to non-profit housing associations.

Ken Sim campaigned for Mayor saying he was an accountant who would sharpen his pencil and find ways to save lots of taxpayer $. Doesn’t look like his “own background” has stopped the FIFA costs from skyrocketing.😅 #VanPoli
Strap in, Toronto, cause this will blow your mind. In 2015 Paris started work on a major transit expansion. Said first phase -- eight km of heavy rail, all underground -- would be done in 2024. And this week, less than half way through 2024, it opened

ABC really outdid itself today in the political cynicism dept, pulling an audacious bait + switch by voting down a 30-plan to protect English Bay from rising sea levels, then amending it to vote in favour of a road expansion project at Beach/Denman.
When this kind of thing pops up, it’s always good to revisit this piece from WEP last year, outlining exactly where 5 years of this government has brought us.

Some pics from the @torontomarathon yesterday- 42.2 km through the city. One of our teammates made us all ribbon skirts to run in to raise awareness for MMIWG2S and show solidarity as Indigenous women. It was a very inspired run in so many ways. 🫶🏽❤️ #RedDressDay
Coffee Crisp is a Toronto candy bar. A coffee-flavoured variant of a British wafer bar, Coffee Crisp was first produced in 1939 at the Rowntree Co. Ltd. factory on Sterling Rd. near Dundas W. and has never been made anywhere else in the world.
So we’ve been dragged a bit about the Coffee Crisp, but if we’re going to talk Toronto candy bars, surely this West End invention, the Crispy Crunch, which predates it, should also get a mention, as written about in the 2022 WEP Food issue.
@pwaldkirch Agreed. My (now former) building has been slated for redevelopment now. One of those classic 3-4 storey wood-frame stucco boxes from the middle of the last century. Nothing fancy, but also relatively affordable. Why they want to tear this down but not the houses down the block...
Conspiracy theorists breathe deeply now!
15-minute-city guru @CarlosMorenoFr 's new book is a...rather reasonable guide to how all our lives can be improved through proximity. https://t.co/jhgLCwiHv9 via @citylab
