📊 New federal longitudinal data confirm what students and practitioners have long known: basic needs insecurity often persists throughout students' college journeys.
Our latest analysis explores what that means for student success.
Federal longitudinal data can tell us what happens when students can't afford essentials like food and housing.
This is the first in a series exploring what these findings reveal about persistence, well-being, and student success, and how we can fix it: https://t.co/a6jACAYgnw
Brand new federal longitudinal data reveal a troubling reality: student basic needs insecurity remains widespread, and persists throughout college.
Federal data on basic needs has always been a snapshot. Now, we can understand how hardship shapes students' journeys. 🧵

The House FY27 Labor-HHS-Education spending bill closes the Pell Grant shortfall—a necessary step.
But it would do so while cutting or eliminating other vital supports that help students stay enrolled and complete college. 🧵
It also cuts federal education research and data collection that help policymakers, institutions, and advocates understand what students need to succeed.
Campuses and policymakers cannot fix what they do not measure.
The bill would eliminate subsidized loans for undergrads, spiking interest for millions of students, while slashing programs like Federal Work Study & SEOG that low-income students rely on to enroll and stay enrolled. Stay tuned for more analysis in the coming days. (2/2)
The House Labor-H appropriations bill—scheduled to be marked up on Tuesday—would close the Pell Grant shortfall in the coming year, and modestly raise the maximum award by $50. But it comes on the back of deep cuts to other vital higher education and student aid programs. (1/2)
This week, the House will consider H.R. 7892, the "No Aid for Ghost Students Act."
Despite its framing, the Department of Ed already has tools to address fraud. The bill instead raises serious concerns about expanding executive power over federal student aid. 🧵
