RuneScape boss Jon Bellamy says Jagex has one long-term goal: to make RuneScape the world’s biggest MMO by overtaking World of Warcraft.

Bellamy admitted there’s still “a big old gap” between RuneScape and World of Warcraft but said the studio is aiming high because “if you’re going to set lofty and ambitious goals, why not swing for the top?”

As part of that strategy, Jagex removed RuneScape’s Treasure Hunter microtransactions last year, despite significantly cutting revenue.
Bellamy said the decision cost Jagex “quite a large chunk” of revenue but helped stabilize membership numbers for the first time in four years and rebuild player trust.

He also said removing unpopular monetization isn’t enough on its own. The studio has spent the past year delivering “less FOMO, less rubbish” while improving the overall experience and is now focused on creating content that keeps players coming back.
