That’s a wrap for #IASSC23! We thank all the delegates for so generously sharing their knowledge & making the conference so collaborative and enjoyable! We very much enjoyed sharing acid sulfate sites around SA over the 3 field trips and can’t wait for the next IASSC in 2025!
A great week of science, field trips and spending time with a great bunch of people at the 9th international acid sulfate soils conference @IASSC_2023 we are hosting in Adelaide, one more field trip to go tomorrow!
Mr Jeff Tate from Coast Protection Board @SAEnvirWater opening the 9th International Acid Sulfate Soil Conference #IASSC23. Thanks to the Coast Protection Board for supporting the conference opening for the delegates
Great pre-conference field trip on the International #acidsulfatesoils conference down to the lower Murray seeing the effects of high water levels on Lakes Albert and Alexandrina and led by @em_ley , @envir_scientist and enthusiastic Rob Fitzpatrick

First field trip of ##IASSC23 underway at Wally’s Landing, Finniss River - site of a major acidification during the millennium drought #acidsulfatesoils
En route to the International #acidsulfatesoil conference - floodwaters in the lower Murray are still evident. Looking forward to seeing it on the ground on tomorrow's field trip

Another natural schwertmannite occurrence was detected around the same time in a stream (Rotlbach) in the Ziller-taler Alps in Austria (Schwertmann et al. 1995).
Acid sulfate soils have fascinating mineral chemistry. Join us for more at the #IASSC23 https://t.co/YWEmrfIrcl
One of the 1st inland discoveries of schwertmannite in the 'natural' environment was in the Mount Lofty Ranges in 1990.These photos show Prof Rob Fitzpatrick, Dr Peter Self (1) &Prof Schwertmann (2) at the site, which is also part of Fieldtrip 3 at #IASSC23 https://t.co/YWEmrfIrcl
The site has reddish-brown gelatinous precipitates
which contain ferrihydrite with minor amounts of goethite. The reddish/orange-brown thin friable crusts contain schwertmannite and goethite. The soil is classified as Alfic Sodic Sulfaquent (Fitzpatrick and Shand 2008).
A common mineral in sulfuric soils and acidic, sulfate-rich environments, are jarosite mottles. Shown here as pale-yellow masses between 40-80 cm, it is formed when pyrite is oxidised, and indicates severe acidification (pH< 3) #acidsulfatesoils#IASSC23
The #IASSC23 mid conference field trip will be visiting this site - Register for the 9th Internation Acid Sulfate Soils Conference (March 26-31, 2023) here: Early bird registration and abstracts closing Nov 30 2022.

South Australia has some fascinating examples of acid sulfate soils. The photo below is from Gilman, approx 10km from Adelaide CBD. This coastal site was bunded and drained ~50 yrs ago for development, oxidising hypersulfidic material to sulfuric material.. #acidsulfatesoils
Within the bunded area, over 85 % of sulfides above the oxidation front have oxidised over the past 50 years, with an estimated 520 000 tonnes of sulfuric acid being produced (Thomas et al 2004)
