#DidYouKnow the IBHS team uses a handheld laser scanner to create 3D-printed models of real hailstones? These replicas help us:
💨 Study hailstone aerodynamics
🧊 Produce cavity molds for ice impact testing
🛰️ Model radar scattering based on natural hail shapes

#DidYouKnow that you can be a part of hail-record history by using your cellphone and a soda can?
Last year, IBHS researchers were able to use cellphone photos and AI-machine, vision- based methods to verify the new Texas record hailstone. That is the first time a record has ever been verified and designated using only photos.
IBHS Director of AI Research, Dr. Hesam Fallahian, shares how IBHS is able to put this technology into action.
Think about a large can of soup, being thrown at you 80 miles an hour.
That’s about how much the largest hailstone recorded in Illinois weighs, said Ian Giammanco, lead research meteorologist at the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. https://t.co/TuvRsMr11e

How fast can field equipment be deployed when a storm is on the way? ⛈️
During our annual @ibhshailstudy, researchers must act quickly in order to capture critical hail data. As each moment counts, we put our team to the test to see how quickly they can deploy field equipment before the “storm” arrives. ⏲️
🏡 Your roof spends years exposed to different elements, but how does that affect its performance over time?
That's what the IBHS Roof Aging Farm is designed to answer. IBHS researchers study how different roofing materials naturally weather over the years, which includes testing of aged samples against wind, hail, and wildfire to better understand long-term performance.

What makes one hailstorm more damaging than another? 🌨️
The answer isn't as simple as hailstone size.
In the latest episode of the Disaster Discussions Podcast, hear what IBHS researchers learned after following storms across the Plains — and how those insights are helping bridge the gap between the field and the lab.

Ever wondered how researchers study hail?
@Ginger_Zee recently visited the IBHS Research Center for a behind-the-scenes look at how our team studies hail. From a live hail impact demonstration to learning the science behind stronger homes, the segment explores how building choices can make a difference during severe weather.

Months of preparation go into every @ibhshailstudy field study.
From 3D scanning roof panels and calibrating hail instrumentation to packing trailers and deployment gear, our team took the key steps that will allow them to collect the data that will drive the future of hail research and building resilience.

🏠 Your roof is your home’s first line of defense against severe weather, and with IBHS’s Hail Impact-Resistant (IR) Shingle Ratings, it’s easier than ever for homeowners to choose shingles they can trust to perform when hail hits.
After testing approximately 95% of the IR asphalt shingle market, 18 products had a ranking of "Good." View the full results at https://t.co/RxRyXHwg5y.
Storms don't follow a schedule - and neither do hail researchers. 🌩️

Americans must demand more out of roofs to protect us from severe weather. 🏠 Yet, the ‘best roof’ depends on a wide variety of factors, ranging from geography and weather to budget and roof cover performance.
If you want to find the right one for you, use IBHS's Roofing Roadmaps. Dive into the latest research on wind and hail performance of roofs and guidance on the best (and worst) systems at https://t.co/tC9RhG4zeN.
I present to you the hail record for Colorado set in 2023 near Yuma, CO by @Dan_Fitts & @Jerry_Doremus. Thank you IBHS Record Hail Quick Response Team for sharing the file with me.

I'm 3D printing Colorado Record Hail Stone found by @Dan_Fitts & @Jerry_Doremus in August, 2023 near Yuma, CO. Pretty excited to have the file from IBHS Record Hail Quick Response Team. I cannot and will not share this file with anyone per their request. @BigDawgWx & I hope to use this for educational purposes for any events we do.

What makes one hailstone stronger than another?
In our @ibhshailstudy, IBHS engineers tested how hailstones respond to compression, then used machine vision to analyze their internal structure. 🧊
These insights help us better prepare homes and buildings for severe weather events, such as hailstorms. ⛈️
