International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (Australia). Working for Australia to join the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons #nuclearban
The latest article for Declassified Australia — by expert researcher Jess Boylan:
“Australia’s subterfuge around its anti-nuclear commitments keeps Australians in the dark about American nuclear weapons on our territory.”

The Russians know.
The Chinese know.
But Australians are NOT allowed to know.
That’s the trouble with ‘democracy’ — if the people know the truth of what’s really going on, they might want to change it.

@tilmanaruff for @ConversationEDU on the NPT Review Conference underway. "Nuclear-armed states have not only failed to disarm, they are growing, modernising and threatening to use their arsenals in an accelerating arms race."

"The best way to put sovereign guardrails excluding nuclear weapons around our military cooperation with the United States is to join the ban treaty. The end of New START makes doing that, as Labor’s national policy platform commits, more urgent.”
@tilmanaruff "New START was the last treaty constraint on the most destructive weapons ever built. Its collapse leaves the world more dangerous and less predictable."

@AustralianLabor "cannot credibly support nuclear restraint and disarmament while standing outside the global ban, which has been joined by over half the world’s nations."
NEW DECLASSIFIED AUSTRALIA
Australia has signed up to a system where, at a moment’s notice, RAAF’s F-35 fighter jet ‘parts and components’ may be whisked off the shelves at the RAAF Williamtown Air Base in New South Wales on the whim of a foreign state to be exported to a foreign country in a distant war zone.

The very, very bad news for Australia in America’s new ‘National Security Strategy’ paper needs to be pointed out.
▪️It says: America will “counter hostile and subversive influences” (China) and will “press” on allies like Australia to increase their militaries and open more US bases, to confront ‘aggression’ with aggression.
▪️All of this is aiming to keep the wars in the regions, and away from America’s homeland.
▪️The first line in a future blockade and confrontation of China is Japan, Taiwan, Phillipines, Indonesia.
▪️Australia’s main role is to support the first line, with US bases, facilities, bomber bases, subs bases, Marines base, spy bases, and as an operational supply hub. Plus a few planes like the F-35s and AUKUS subs, if they are ready.
Quotes:
“This strategic clarity will allow the United States to counter hostile and subversive influences efficiently while avoiding the overextension and diffuse focus that undermined past efforts."
“We will build a military capable of denying aggression anywhere in the First Island Chain. But the American military cannot, and should not have to, do this alone.
“Our allies must step up and spend—and more importantly do—much more for collective defense.
“America’s diplomatic efforts should focus on pressing our First Island Chain allies and partners to allow the U.S. military greater access to their ports and other facilities, to spend more on their own defense, and most importantly to invest in capabilities aimed at deterring aggression.”

On the anniversary of ICAN’s Nobel Peace Prize, co-founder @NukeDaveSweeney warns in @GuardianAus that Australia is drifting towards the normalisation of nuclear war-fighting, and urges the government to finally sign the Nuclear Ban Treaty. #NuclearBan
On this day in 2017 ICAN was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for our efforts to ban nuclear weapons. Setsuko Thurlow’s message remains clear: “Our light now is the ban treaty.” We keep pushing for a safer world, free from the threat of nuclear war. #TPNW#NuclearBan
The Asia-Pacific has witnessed the true costs of nuclear testing. We carry its burdens still. We will oppose any effort to normalise the testing and use of these weapons of indiscriminate destruction. #auspol#AsiaPacific#APLN
