Hi there. How you doing? Last 2 years have been shit, right? Yes. This year I've had the most new subscribers (and it's only August), since my first year in business, in 2013 when I had 4000. If this Twitter account is mildly good, please subscribe. RT? https://t.co/wfKSc3avFB
FIVE QUID CLASSICS
If you’ve always fancied giving classical music a whirl but the prospect of sitting through a lengthy concert while pretending to know your Elgar from your elbow feels a touch daunting, the @TheCBSO has you covered.
Its new First Listen series at Symphony Hall consists of three informal, hour-long concerts designed specifically for orchestral newcomers. Better still, tickets are just £5.
Each starts at 6pm, has no interval and comes with a guest presenter to explain the music, its background and the human stories behind it – essentially taking away any sense that you’re supposed to know what you’re listening for.
First up is Elgar’s Enigma Variations on September 29, conducted by Stephanie Childress and introduced by saxophonist and radio presenter Jess Gillam.
Then comes Beethoven’s mighty Eroica Symphony on February 16, followed on April 28 by Schubert’s beautiful, brooding and famously unfinished Eighth Symphony, alongside Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier suite.
Five pounds to hear a full symphony orchestra at Symphony Hall? That’s some introduction. Looks like you're fresh out of excuses.

Hey @HawksmoorTweets, is it true you’d like to come to the fantastic City of Birmingham? Because I think I’ve found you the perfect spot 🙂↕️
The Co-operative Bank on Colmore Row is moving out next month 👀
https://t.co/bX1fstLwQu Lisel Haas photo exhibition at LoB looks really interesting - on my To Do list. (Also CBSO Noddy Guide to Orchestra).
How does BCC make their own events look so dull + uninviting? Good job @ichoosemag is around!
Edgbaston Stadium (@Edgbaston) has revealed the first designs for its new 146-room Radisson RED hotel, due to open in time for the Ashes in July 2027. Currently under construction, it’ll include 85 pitch-facing rooms plus Spin, a rooftop restaurant, bar and wraparound terrace overlooking the ground and Birmingham skyline.
Part of a major stadium redevelopment, the project also includes a new 3,200-seat stand. Crucially, you won’t need a room key: the hotel’s bars and public spaces will welcome everyone.
I wasn't expecting to spend so long looking at chairs.
Not iconic designer chairs. Not even antiques. Just ordinary, everyday chairs. The sort you might scroll past on Facebook Marketplace, inherit from a relative or leave outside your house with a handwritten "FREE" sign attached.
But that's exactly why The Final Bid, the remarkable new exhibition by internationally renowned artist Michael Pinsky at @mac_birmingham, works so brilliantly.
It takes one of the most familiar objects in our homes and quietly transforms it into something extraordinary.

I thought my eyes were deceiving me. The scaffolding on New Street has FINALLY been taken down after 3 years!! Hopefully these units can be re-let now, prime retail space here.
This is great news; 150+ new jobs in the city’s hospitality sector and training for those wishing to break into it.
The industry continues to back itself and the government now needs to too.
Just back from a preview of Birmingham enfant terrible @joelycett's first major solo art exhibition, EVERY THING MUST GO at @bm_ag.
Think giant pink woolly mammoth, extinct animals, demolished buildings, discontinued chocolate bars and plenty of Joe’s trademark unhinged surreality. It’s colourful, nostalgic, funny and surprisingly moving.
Exhibition opens July 29 and runs all the way to February.
Watch this space for a video interview, a Birmingham only game of ‘This or That’ plus even a written article, whatever one of them is?
Exhibition is free.
