We often think of legal education as something meant for people who want to become lawyers.

But access to the law starts with knowing your rights, understanding how the law affects everyday life, and knowing who to turn when those rights are at stake.

That is the idea behind Law For All. IDIA Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education) takes dialogue around law and legal education beyond law schools, bringing them into communities and creating space for people to ask questions and understand the law in practical ways.

In Rampura, this meant conversations around marriage, inheritance, workplace harassment, domestic violence, child protection and more.

Through its collaboration with Ekakanya Foundation, IDIA has now conducted its third legal awareness workshop together since 2023.

Because at IDIA, access is not just about reaching more people. It is about making legal education relevant, understandable and useful to the communities it reaches.

Across India, IDIA (Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education) moves through a network of people.

A network of 1,000+ student volunteers works across state chapters, taking Law For All into schools and communities, mentoring students, supporting aspiring scholars and helping make the path to legal education more accessible.

And the network does not stop at graduation. IDIA scholars who have gone on to build careers in law, policy and the judiciary return as mentors, trainers and leaders, helping the next generation navigate the same path.

That is what makes the model so powerful: support moves forward, and the people who receive it can become the people who pass it on.

Getting into law school is only one part of the journey.

For a student without the right networks, resources or support, there are several points where that journey can become difficult: discovering the opportunity, preparing for the entrance exam, adapting to law school, accessing the right resources, and eventually building a career.

IDIA’s (Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education) work is designed around these points of access.

We build awareness where the possibility of law as a career may not have reached. We identify potential beyond conventional markers. We provide the training, financial support, accessibility measures and mentorship needed to help students move forward.

And that support does not end when a student enters law school. It continues through their education and into the profession, helping them build the knowledge, confidence and opportunities needed to establish themselves in the legal field.

Because access to legal education is not a single moment. It is a journey, and every stage matters.

That is what the IDIA model is built to address.

From Shimla to Kangra, IDIA’s (Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education) Law For All brought conversations about legal education into classrooms across Himachal Pradesh.

Over four days, the IDIA Delhi Chapter gave students space to ask questions, explore unfamiliar career paths and consider possibilities they may not have encountered before.

Across the country, IDIA’s volunteers take Law For All into schools and communities, reaching students who may never have had the opportunity to consider law as a career. They look for curiosity, ability and potential that may otherwise remain unseen.

For students who choose to take that possibility forward, IDIA stays with them through mentorship, guidance and support, helping them navigate the path towards leading law schools.

The Himachal Pradesh outreach is one more example of how IDIA takes this work beyond the classroom: reaching students where they are, recognising potential, and creating a pathway for those who want to take it further.

On 16 August 2026, the IDIA (Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education) Maharashtra Chapter, in collaboration with @CRYINDIA (Child Rights and You), took Law For All to Changlamata Madhyamik Ashram High School in Janapur, Udgir, Latur, bringing students closer to legal education, career opportunities and the guidance needed to explore them.

The conversations opened up new perspectives, answered important questions and helped students see new possibilities for their futures.

IDIA will continue taking Law For All to more classrooms, more communities and more students across India, making access to legal education a reality for those who need it most.

If law is the operating system of democracy, diversity is its integrity check.

When Prof. Shamnad Basheer founded IDIA (Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education) in 2010, the pipeline into India's premier National Law Universities was overwhelmingly gated by geography, language, and economic privilege. IDIA changed the equation by intervening at the root: discovering raw potential in marginalized communities, funding a five-year legal education, and providing comprehensive mentorship.

Today, IDIA's impact speaks through its scholars:

→ 270+ scholars from underprivileged backgrounds, including 45 with disabilities, trained and placed into top NLUs across India (from 1,000+ trained and 238,000+ reached).
→ First-generation lawyers, children of daily-wage workers, farmers, and artisans, now practicing in the Supreme Court, top-tier law firms, policy think tanks, and human rights chambers.
→ Meaningful systemic shifts in institutional accessibility, including landmark interventions for students with disabilities taking entrance exams like Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).

Diversity in law isn't a footnote to justice, it's a constitutional necessity. A legal system built without the daily-wage worker, the tribal landholder, the disabled student, the first-generation dreamer, isn't broken by accident. It's incomplete by design.

That is why IDIA needs to exist, because justice can't be equal if access never is.

A student can have the ability to pursue law and still never consider it simply because they don't know what the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is, what a National Law University (NLU) is, or where a career in law can take them.

That gap between ability and awareness is one of the places where IDIA (Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education) works.

Through Law For All, IDIA takes information about law and legal education to students outside the usual legal education ecosystem. For those who choose to pursue it, that first exposure can continue through CLAT training, mentorship, and support throughout law school.

Because increasing diversity in law begins with making legal education a possibility that more students can see, understand, and pursue. The Telangana drive was one more step towards making that possibility visible to students across the state. And IDIA will continue taking that opportunity to more students, more districts, and more communities.

For many students, law is still understood through a very narrow picture shaped by courtrooms, judges, and lawyers.

Law For All widens that picture.

At Padampur, IDIA brought students into conversations around legal education, CLAT, law school, and the many directions a legal career can take. For those who choose to pursue it, IDIA's (Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education) support continues through training, mentorship, scholarships, and guidance through law school.

Padampur was one more classroom where law became a possibility. And IDIA will keep taking that possibility to more students, more districts, and more communities.

Many students know about Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), engineering, medicine, commerce and other familiar career paths because these are the options they hear about most often.

Law is not always part of that conversation.

Law For All brings that conversation to students directly, introducing them to legal education, Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), law schools and the different careers a law degree can lead to.

For IDIA (Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education), building a more diverse legal profession starts with making sure more talented students get to know law as a career option. Hanumangarh was one more step towards making that possible.

Poorakalan, Channasandra, Raisen, Machilipatnam, Pelling, Phagwara, Ongole, Gamnom, Pitij, Satyanarayanpur, Pathanamthitta, Birbhum...

Many of us living in metropolitan cities may not recognise these town names. But these are the places our Scholars call home.

When we founded @IDIALaw , there were four of us as Founding Trustees.

@shamnad was our Managing Trustee—and the heart and soul of IDIA. Justice Ruma Pal, Prof. M.P. Singh and I would often say that we were the organisation’s hands and legs.

Seven years ago, following Shamnad’s untimely passing, I took on the responsibility of Managing Trustee.

Since then, IDIA has grown from training 1,000 students annually to reaching more than 1,00,000 students every year. We now have active operations across 22 states. At any given time, more than 100 IDIA Scholars are studying at leading National Law Universities.

Our Scholars come from towns and communities that are often missing from conversations about access to legal education. Many have gone on to join leading law offices, serve their communities and become true agents of change.

Their journeys remind us why IDIA exists—and how much more remains to be done.

Growth on this scale requires exceptional people and a strong team at the helm of the Trust. It therefore gives me great pleasure to welcome Manoj K Menon as a Trustee of IDIA.

Manoj previously served as Managing Director, India Board Member and Site Leader at Morgan Stanley. A BITS Pilani alumnus, he is also an internationally credentialed executive coach and a trusted mentor to senior executives and high-performance leaders.

I am confident that Manoj’s experience, perspective and guidance will strengthen IDIA as we begin the next chapter of our journey.
