An Agricultural Research Institute that improves livelihoods, enhances food&nutrition security, increases employment, and preserves natural resource integrity.
This week, @CGIAR Chief Scientist Dr Sandra Milach is visiting IITA Headquarters in Ibadan to meet with researchers and learn firsthand how IITA's research is aligning with strategic partnerships and scaling.
Her work leading CGIAR's 2025-2030 science portfolio aligns with IITA's mission to deliver climate-smart innovations, improved genetics, and scalable solutions for Africa's farmers.

The entire IITA family is so proud! 🥳🥂🎊🎉👏
Big congratulations to our very own Professor Rony Swennen and Dr Alejandro Ortega-Beltran for being selected as members of the 2026 Top Agri-food Pioneers cohort by The @WorldFoodPrize Foundation!
This prestigious recognition celebrates outstanding contributions to transforming food systems worldwide, in honor of the World Food Prize’s 40th anniversary.
“This achievement is due to devoted banana teamwork and support by the IITA services.” - Prof Swennen.
And we all at IITA-@CGIAR couldn’t agree more. Years of dedication, science, and teamwork across crops, research and continents have now earned global recognition.
@alexob36's work has been equally transformative, advancing research on aflatoxin management and food safety, developing innovative biocontrol solutions to reduce contamination in staple crops, and helping safeguard the health and livelihoods of millions of farmers and consumers across Africa and beyond. His science continues to drive impact where it matters most: making food systems safer, more resilient, and more inclusive.
Speaking on the announcement, IITA Director General Dr @simeonehui said, "Their selection is a testament to their scientific excellence, dedication, and the impact of their work on agricultural development and food security. It is also a recognition of the quality of science and innovation that IITA brings to Africa and the world."
Congratulations to Professor Rony Swennen and Dr Alejandro Ortega-Beltran!!!🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳

The evaluation of biotech maize varieties at Karama&Cyabayaga sites in @NyagatareDistr has shown promising results, with strong resistance to fall armyworm under the district’s warm tropical savanna climate, characterized by high temperatures, abundant sunshine, and low rainfall.
#IITA, @RwandaAgriBoard, @CipotatoRW & @BiovIntCIAT_eng are training @WrrRwanda field staff on crop production, post-harvest management, climate-smart agriculture to improve market readiness. The skills gained will be shared with farmers through cooperatives and learning groups.
Honored to join on June
2nd leaders from governments, development finance institutions, the private sector, and CGIAR colleagues at the West Africa Rice Investment Roundtable in Accra.
Special appreciation to Dr. @BaboucarrManne8 Manneh and @AfricaRice for their leadership in advancing Africa’s rice agenda.
My message: West Africa already has many proven rice technologies. The challenge is financing their adoption at scale.

The difference is becoming clearer every day! At 45 days after planting, biotech potato varieties are showing remarkable resistance to potato late blight compared to conventional varieties under the same field conditions. Promising step to resilient potato production.
@IITARWANDA@RwandaAgriBoard@IITA_CGIAR@CGIAR@nduwath Exactly the kind of practical innovation we need to scale for more resilient local food systems. Great to see SAH moving from introduction to application in cassava seed multiplication!
In @NyagatareDistr, Rwanda’s journey toward climate-smart agriculture continues to gain momentum. From May 26–29,
@RwandaAgriBoard, in collaboration with @aatfafrica and other agricultural partners, conducted a field evaluation of 12 biotech (TELA) maize varieties under controlled fall armyworm infestation trials.
The exercise brought together scientists, regulators, seed companies, and international partners to assess innovative maize hybrids designed to resist fall armyworm and improve productivity for farmers. This important initiative reflects Rwanda’s commitment to strengthening food security, agricultural innovation, and resilient maize production for the future.
A new nutrition-focused initiative promoting the cultivation of iron-rich beans and vegetables in school farms is set to improve diets and reduce school feeding costs for more than 445,000 learners in Karongi, Nyamasheke, and Rusizi districts.
