A landmark day for democracy in Lesotho 🇱🇸
On 28 May 2026, International IDEA and @UNDPLesotho co-hosted the official launch of the Civic and Voter Education Strategy and Voter Registration Strategy in Maseru, two documents that set a clear roadmap for building a more informed, inclusive, and participatory democracy.
The strategies were formally signed by IEC Chairperson Rev. Dr John Maphephe and the Principal Secretary to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftainship, Police and Home Affairs, signalling strong institutional and government ownership of Lesotho's democratic future.
As International IDEA's Regional Head of Programmes, Gram Matenga, put it: "Democracy is not a one-day event. It is a way of life. Meaningful democracy depends on an informed, engaged, and empowered citizenry every day."
The @EUinLesotho reaffirmed its long-term commitment to resilient democracy in Lesotho, noting that these strategies will strengthen the legitimacy of electoral outcomes when citizens can participate competently. Our appreciation to the European Union for the funding that made this work possible.
These strategies lay a concrete foundation for long-term electoral integrity in Lesotho. International IDEA remains committed to supporting the IEC and the Government of Lesotho in turning strategy into sustained democratic gains for all citizens.

How can closer collaboration between institutions strengthen democratic participation?
In Bhutan, growing cooperation between parliament, civil society and the media is helping bring citizens closer to decision-making.
From the country’s first public hearing on a major national programme to more structured engagement with civil society and expanded opportunities for youth participation, these evolving connections are creating new pathways for dialogue. At the same time, stronger media relations are helping translate parliamentary debates into accessible information for citizens across the country.
As Bhutan’s democracy continues to develop, this shift towards more open and regular engagement is strengthening transparency, accountability and trust. Our latest article explores how these relationships are shaping Bhutan’s democratic future. Read more via the link in the comments.
