🦴 Every fragility fracture can serve to prevent the next one.
When fracture patients are not screened for osteoporosis or offered treatment, it leaves them at risk of subsequent fractures.
Fracture Liaison Services (FLS) provide a coordinated approach to secondary fracture prevention, helping ensure that patients who present with a fragility fracture receive appropriate fracture risk assessment, treatment and follow-up.
This World Osteoporosis Day, IOF and Capture The Fracture® call on hospitals and health systems to implement and strengthen FLS as part of comprehensive post-fracture care.
Is your healthcare facility ready to join the Capture the Fracture® network? Complete the Best Practice Framework Questionnaire to assess your post-fracture care programme:

According to a U.S. study published in Osteoporosis International, bone density testing for osteoporosis screening by DXA declined by 35% among Medicare beneficiaries between 2005 and 2023.
The steepest declines were observed among racial, ethnic, and socioeconomically disadvantaged populations.
Preventive visits were the strongest predictor of whether a beneficiary underwent DXA, increasing the odds of testing nearly tenfold, according to the researchers.
This suggests that policy solutions should not only focus on ensuring adequate reimbursement for the scan, but also on improving access to primary and preventive care, especially in underserved communities.
