It's International Day of Medical Physics, but just what does a medical physicist do? Trick question - there's to much to list here, but here's what Oli gets up to...

🏅 The work of Senior Radiation Engineer, Mohamed Madani has been recognised with an @ipemnews gold medal!
Alongside his team, he maintains & optimises precision linear accelerators and radiotherapy systems.
Congratulations Mohamed and thank you for everything you do! 👏
Today we celebrate Clinical Engineers everywhere, whose expertise keeps medical technology safe, effective and ready to support patient care every day.
Clinical Engineers are the technical problem-solvers behind the scenes of healthcare. They maintain and test thousands of medical devices used across hospitals and community services, from monitors and infusion pumps to surgical and imaging systems, ensuring every device performs safely when patients need it most.
This year’s Global Clinical Engineering Day we are highlighting learning and collaboration. Pictured are engineers in action: a Senior Engineer mentoring a student engineer during hands-on training, and another engineer carrying out precision repairs on a surgical diathermy system. Together, they reflect the skill, teamwork and dedication that define the profession.
We are proud to recognise the essential role of Clinical Engineers in advancing patient safety, supporting innovation and strengthening the future of healthcare technology.

Today is Global Clinical Engineering Day and what better way to celebrate it than introducing you to the winner of IPEM's Roy Ellis Patient Benefit Award, Richard Major.
Richard was selected as this year's winner for his highly impactful work in Rehabilitation Engineering, including the development of a therapeutic approach called Targeted Training (https://t.co/fUMBxR0DRY) and the founding of The Movement Centre.
Won winning the awards Richard said
"As an octogenarian it is most gratifying to receive this award which recognises voluntary work over the last 45 years. Having trained as a mechanical engineer in the motor industry it was a large sideways step to move into Rehabilitation Engineering when I joined The Orthotic Research and Locomotor Assessment Unit (ORLAU) in Oswestry some 50 years ago. A steep learning curve was greatly assisted by meeting Penny Butler a physiotherapist. She left to do her own research into control problems experienced by children with Cerebral palsy but discussed her findings with me and this led to a new therapeutic approach called Targeted Training based on biomechanical principles.
To test the effectiveness of the approach we set up The Movement Centre as a registered charity, and are now in the process of providing on line teaching of the approach through a new charity called OPTIMI. In the near future we are going to transfer this material onto a platform based in New Zealand which is dedicated to the needs of therapists and the prize money will assist with this process."
Congratulations John on a lifetime of work making an incredible difference to the lives of children.
