guys i believe my boyfriend is cringe
not the funny kind either. the kind that makes your stomach drop a little when you realize other people can hear him.
it started small. he does this thing where he announces what he’s doing like he’s hosting a cooking show no one subscribed to. “now we gently place the mug in the microwave, 45 seconds, not a second more.” i used to think it was just him being weird at home. then we were in line at dunkin and he said “the iced coffee approaches” loud enough that the guy in front of us turned around.
last month we went to my cousin’s barbecue. he brought a little notebook. i thought it was for scores or something. no. he was ranking people’s burger techniques. he whispered “solid bun-to-patty ratio, but the cheese placement is chaotic” while my uncle was still holding the spatula. my cousin’s wife looked at me like i owed her an explanation.
the night it really hit me we were walking back from the bar. some guy on a bike almost hit us and my boyfriend yelled “plot twist!” then started clapping. the biker flipped us off. i just kept walking.
he’s not mean. he’s not even trying to be the center of attention most of the time. he just… comments on life like it’s a youtube video he’s watching instead of living. sometimes i catch him doing it when he thinks i’m asleep. last week he stood in the kitchen at 1am and said “the leftover pizza has entered its final form” and i had to pretend i didn’t hear.
i still like him. that’s the annoying part. he remembers how i take my tea and he always saves me the good fries. but last night he tried to high-five the waitress after she brought the check and i felt my face get hot. she smiled like it was cute. i wanted to slide under the table.
idk. maybe i’m the problem. maybe everyone else’s boyfriend does this and they just don’t talk about it. or maybe i’m dating a man who thinks the world has a laugh track and i’m the only one who can hear the silence after.
Xiaomi just dropped the 18 Fold two days before Apple’s first foldable.
Here’s the actual fight:
Xiaomi 18 Fold (China only, for now)
• Passport-sized when closed
• 5.38” cover + 7.58” inner (wide, almost square)
• In-house Xring O3 chip
• 200MP Leica main + 3.5x periscope
• 6,000mAh battery
• 67W wired + 50W wireless
• 219g
• Starts ~$1,640
iPhone Duo (just announced)
• Same wide “book” form factor
• 7.6” inner screen
• Apple silicon + software integration
• Dual 48MP cameras (no dedicated telephoto)
• Heavier (~254g)
• Starts $1,999
• Global, October
Xiaomi wins the spec sheet. Better zoom, bigger battery, faster charging, cheaper.
Apple wins the part that actually decides what people buy: it’s available everywhere and it already works with the rest of your stuff.
That’s the real split. One phone is the better gadget. The other one is the one you’ll see in people’s hands next month.
Which one are you taking?
