Ideas + Policy + Innovation for Pakistan 🇵🇰 💡
Former Minister | Building Institutions & Reform
In the service of youth and knowledge. ☝️ فناء فى اللّٰه
November 2nd, 2013.
My late father was passing by a small village school near Chiniot. He stopped his car, went inside, and sat on the floor beside the children.
Seeing their condition moved him deeply.
Soon after, he had the school renovated — new furniture was brought in, the children received fresh uniforms, new stationery, and new school bags.
These were the walis of our time people whose hearts were stirred by compassion and whose actions spoke of service.
May Allah accept his efforts and reward him abundantly for his devotion to the cause of education.
In 1994, Dr Imtiaz Ahmad returned from a cushy professorship in Philadelphia to a one-room family office importing and selling chemicals to paint companies. In the three decades since, he has grown the family business from that one room into the rarest of creatures: an honest-to-goodness manufacturing-focused, international business rooted in Pakistan.
In November 2025, one of his companies, Montage Oil, partnered up with AsiaPak Investments to purchase Lotte Chemicals in Pakistan from its South Korean sponsors in a $69 million deal. He has been Chairman of Lotte’s board since. Nine months after the acquisition, Lotte Chemicals bought a 56% stake in Engro Polymer and Chemicals for Rs 19.7 billion ($71.2 billion at the current exchange rate).
And his ambitions do not end there. The professor is making a play for Pakistan’s chemicals manufacturing industry. The only question is, can this business professor-turned-manufacturing magnate teach corporate Pakistan a lesson or two?

A lesson of Principles for us & our Youth
Shocked to know about the sudden accidental death of Advocate of the Supreme Court Barrister Arif Mahmood.
He taught at UMT’s School of Law & Policy and was once many years later offered to take up a case against us- to which he flatly refused.
He was a professional lawyer with high principles, integrity and ethics.
Another lawyer and ex-faculty member faced with the same offer later in his career chose differently and is now a very senior government official.
Allah granted Arif sb Shahadah, a life of eternity, and the later a ‘small’ worldly post.
Who was or is really successful?
We as society must know who is honorable and who is not.
May Allah Almighty elevate his ranks, grant him the status of a shaheed, and give patience to his family.
Ameen
We are not too far off- recent education data in Pakistan indicates that 80% of 10-year-olds cannot read or understand a basic sentence in any language.

@UMTOfficial students Fatima Azhar and Ariha Akbar have won Rs1 million after securing first place in Punjab’s Youth Innovation Competition with a proposed affordable, high-quality DNA testing method.
Their project beat 154 entries from 51 universities. They will now work with the Punjab Forensic Science Authority to further develop the research.
A major win for student innovation in Pakistan.

There is no national sovereignty without economic sovereignty, and economic sovereignty is a series of decisions about purchases, and whether they build the country’s earning power, or cause its destruction.
Governance Reforms Essential for Better Public Services
Former Federal Secretary Fawad Hasan Fawad called on Ibrahim Hasan Murad, President of the University of Management and Technology (UMT) in Lahore today.
Issues pertaining to governance reforms in Pakistan, improvements in the government system, and key aspects of effective policymaking came under discussion during the meeting.
Fawad Hasan Fawad appreciated UMT’s research initiatives and efforts to promote dialogue on matters of national importance, noting that university research and academic engagement can contribute significantly to national development and effective policymaking.
Deeply hurt by the incident in Peshawar that has caused 34 death and 20 injuries.
We must provide safe infrastructure and public buildings must have a public building safety license which includes structure health and emergency preparedness.
May Allah elevate the ranks of the shuhada and grant sabr to the parents of the minors. Ameen
1. Our youth must take into perspective historical context, not just today’s headlines or narratives. It’s important to look in the rear-view mirror to drive forward, not to live in the past.
2. Yet we mistake recurring crises for unprecedented events because we either do not know our history or have selective amnesia.
3. Pakistan’s current state or decline in some ways is, in large part, relative: the world moves ahead while we remain trapped in decades-old cycles- political & economic.
4. What concerns me most is the lack of political maturity as a nation.
Too often, defeating one another matters more than advancing Pakistan.
5. We must remember honestly, learn from our own mistakes, and place national interest above personal ambition. Otherwise, we will keep fighting over who controls the house while it burns.
A burning house has no winners.
“They moved Land Cruiser and Fortuner owners into Tanks, and Corolla and Civic buyers into Changans and Havals. The Alto buyer got nothing for an EV. The daily wager who burns a litre of petrol a day got no five free units of electricity to charge an electric scooter, and no subsidy to buy one. The concession went up the income ladder, and the debt came down it.
Policymakers must therefore demonstrate the remaining benefits: genuine local value addition, productive employment, exports and affordable mobility. Publish the stats and let people know what the concessions are buying.
A villager would understand the problem immediately. A man struggling to survive borrows Rs50,000 and buys a Rs25,000 phone with it the next morning. A Rs8,000 phone would have served his needs, leaving Rs42,000 for a cart, tools or a sewing machine – all productive assets that could help repay the loan. But the wants have consumed what was required for tending to needs.
But this is Lala Land and dollars are mangoes. They arrive in season, everyone eats his fill, and nobody plants the seed.”
My article in today’s The News on CBU/CKD units import…the day we run out of dollars- this industry will collapse…
There is no national sovereignty without economic sovereignty, and economic sovereignty is a series of decisions about purchases, and whether they build the country’s earning power, or cause its destruction…
