I have a young friend (from Offa) here who got admission into Stanford about four years ago and was running around to raise funds as it was only partly funded.

He submitted a letter to Governor AA for financial support. Government protocols and all that delayed the approval process.

He got the number of the governor directly and chatted him up and shared a copy of the letter on Whatsapp.

Shockingly, the governor responded and within a few days, he got dollar equivalent of N15m paid to him.

When he narrated it to me, I was surprised.

He is doing very well after his Stanford program now and still says hello to the governor once in a while. Surprised at such responsiveness to a private citizen.

I have been impressed by the work @hadizabalausman, @ayowisdom_, @DrJoeAbah and others have done on the NYSC reforms. When called upon, I played my part.

But there is one thing I believe still needs to be treated with caution. It does not look like the most important bit. In a sense, it is exactly that.

…Among the announced changes is a plan to retire the khaki in favour of new attire. On the list of reforms, it looks like the smallest item. It is the one I would urge the administration to drop.

The khaki is not fabric. It is the single most recognisable symbol of the scheme, the one artefact that binds the corps member of 1974 to the corps member of 2026.

A Nigerian who served in Maiduguri in 1981 and one who served in Yenagoa last year have almost nothing in common about their service except that uniform and what it stands for. Strip it and you have not modernised the scheme. You have orphaned it from its own history…

I see the criticism of Tuchel for trying to defend the 1–0 against Argentina, but let me tell you something — if he didn’t do that, if he kept pushing forward and they conceded, the same people would be here saying, ‘Why didn’t he control the game? Why didn’t he defend the lead?’ In knockout football, whatever decision you make, someone will criticize you.

I’m not saying every decision is perfect, but you have to understand the logic behind it. Managing a game at that stage is never simple.

And then… there’s another reality. This Argentina team, the belief, the mentality — sometimes it feels like something special is with them in these moments.

And when you have Lionel Messi… what can you do? He’s 39, and still the best player in the world. You think you’ve controlled him, you think you’ve done everything right — and then he makes the difference. Two assists, two decisive actions, and the game is gone.

My friend went on a business trip and was kidnapped. We didn't know his whereabouts until three days later when a call came in and his elder brother was informed of 6m ransom.

There was a military raid and along the line, some captives died and he and a few others were miraculously rescued and were with the soldiers for three more days because it was dangerous for them to walk home from the forest.

During this period, they fed on the beverages of the soldiers and even wore raincoats of the same soldiers until late the third day when the troops were returning to their base. The captives almost had total possession of the soldiers phones and reached out to their family members at regular intervals. They stuffed them into their van and brought them home when the troops were done with the operation.

This could be the case with the lady holding that phone. The thing about kidnapping is that some details would remain mysterious if you'd never experienced it or your close ones.

I think importantly, everyone respects the place of Mbappe as the leader of the team. And leadership sets the tone.

They are also young people who have been around and known each other for some time now. Mbappe would have handled Dembele’s success with utmost respect. Dembele knows Mbappe is his captain and is a more talented footballer.

And there are many close ones there. Saliba played for Mbappe’s father at Bondy. They both grew up in the same neighbourhood. Dembele is childhood friends with Upamecano. And many other groups like that. It’s similar to England.

Mbappe was asked at the beginning of the tournament about Dembele and he said they need him to play at his best because that Dembele is a dangerous one. That mutual respect is there.

Very healthy dressing room of young men just enjoying being around each other. International camps are like a release from the pressures of stardom. You are with your friends and people you can call family. All that’s needed is leadership and they have that
in good measure.
