Je voudrais vous parler d’un roman de Balzac que nous lisons trop rarement, alors qu’il est d’une actualité presque cruelle.

Dans Le Cousin Pons, Balzac met en scène un musicien vieillissant, désargenté, sans véritable appui, toléré plus qu’aimé par une famille qui le regarde avec condescendance.

Mais Pons possède une richesse qui ne se voit pas. Il est collectionneur, et sa collection est pour lui une patrie intérieure, une fidélité à la beauté qui le tient debout. Lorsque le monde découvre la valeur inestimable de ce qu’il a patiemment rassemblé, les visages changent. Ceux qui le méprisaient se rapprochent, les attentions se multiplient, et ce qui relevait de la beauté devient soudain un enjeu d’argent, une marchandise.

C’est là que Balzac nous atteint encore. Dans ce monde où les relations se changent en transactions, l’inhumanité ne prend pas nécessairement le visage de la violence. Elle peut prendre celui, plus hypocrite, de la prévenance, de la politesse, du sourire.

La grande leçon du livre est peut-être là : ce qui nous protège vraiment, ce ne sont pas nos biens, ce sont nos liens. La solitude nous rend vulnérables, la vieillesse davantage encore. Mais rien ne nous expose autant que l’absence autour de nous d’un cercle humain capable de dire simplement : cet homme compte pour nous.
