Anyways I get mad hearing stories on a weekly basis when students' desire to communicate with their PIs dwindles in realizing how little they cared in the first place.

Perhaps having the habit of recording every meeting between a grad student and a PI will make a department a better place. Surely they can hold themselves accountable. There's no such thing as "communicate better" if one party lacks the constitution of retaining human speech.
