the issue is that for years parents have *not* been able to properly monitor children, nor do they know how as the internet continues to evolve, hence why age verification laws are being enacted in different countries worldwide. at this point it’s not really up to discord, the UK online safety act, australia’s social media ban on children < 16, and legislation in states like texas are proving that this feature is kinda becoming more sought after for the sake of helping parents protect their kids.
you’re right in the sense that the way it’s always worked is that parents have had the final say when it comes to exposing their kids to media (games, movies, etc.), but that honestly hurts kids with parents who don’t know better and being a helicopter parent who knows everything their kid is doing online just isn’t realistic nowadays esp for the average parent who doesn’t have a lot of technical knowledge
@serakrism@Oblivion_OnX ads might be crazy sometimes but mfs be paying $25 a month for netflix and then complain when they can use youtube (which has infinitely more content) for FREE, and gives the option to completely remove ads for less $/month than a netflix subscription
