🔔WATCH LIVE: President Cyril Ramaphosa addresses the high-level gathering at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, on establishing the International Panel on Inequality:
“Poverty is passed on from one generation to another in households. It results in one's starting point in life being a handicap, inferior schooling, inadequate nutrition and the lack of networks that make upward mobility difficult or impossible. This prevents humanity’s progress.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa and global experts gathered at Wits University today to take a historic step, beginning the establishment of the International Panel on Inequality.
President Ramaphosa, who commissioned the first-ever G20 report on global inequality, delivered the keynote address on the global inequality emergency. The report, authored by an Extraordinary Committee of Experts chaired by Nobel Economics Laureate Professor Joseph Stiglitz, recommended establishing a panel modelled on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Representatives of the panel's founding governments; Brazil, Norway, South Africa, and Spain joined the committee in Johannesburg to discuss the urgent need for the panel and progress towards its founding.

Jayati Ghosh, agree with the public: change won’t come from capitalism as we know it alone.
We need to rein in the forces driving inequality. Small, cumulative reforms can add up shaping a system that protects dignity in working life.
The reality is clear: growing fragility in people’s lives is tied to rising inequality and concentrated wealth.

During this conversation Pro Imraan Valodia said "Inequality is an emergency. We need something like an independent, global panel, similar in ambition to the IPCC, to confront it. This hasn’t really been done before, but the potential impact is huge.
Across engagements, there’s a clear message: people want an independent, credible body to drive evidence, accountability, and action on inequality.

I’m excited to be part of this important moment.
As global inequality rises, I’ll be joining President Cyril Ramaphosa, Prof. Joseph E. Stiglitz, Winnie Byanyima, Jayati Ghosh, Wanga Zembe-Mkabile & Adriana Abdenur to discuss the International Panel on Inequality.
This conversation matters to me because the evidence is clear: we are facing an inequality emergency.
As part of the G20 committee behind the global inequality report, I’ve seen how deeply inequality is shaped by policy choices not inevitability.

Inequality and pandemics are feeding each other—and killing people. We know how to stop this vicious cycle. Now, we must do it. If we fail, the next crisis will not only take more lives, it will deepen the divides that already threaten our shared humanity.

"Inequality affects every aspect of our society – health, education, access to justice. The International Panel on Inequality will help us understand the drivers of inequality, the consequences, and the policies that could help address it. It is a proposal that provides some hope that we can do something about this."
Thank you @JosephEStiglitz, for your clarity and guidance as chair of the #G20 Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Inequality.

Inequality is not just wrong, it's dangerous.
But inequality is a choice.
By acting now to address it, we can make the world safer from disease.
