Fairly common? it's a RSU grant that vests quarterly over 4 years called Additional Equity (AE, fka Discretionary Equity or DE).
It comes in at least 2 different sizes. It sounds like your friend got the large grant.
I've gotten the small grant twice for security & reliability work. It seems like 1-3 (different) work-friends get it each year.
