Lovely piece from @RichmoMusic in today’s Times about my Peter Pan-inspired proposal to extend royalties - helping support and fund the cultural sector, at no cost to the taxpayer!
Give it a read and let me know what you think!!

Big Tech said we must water down our copyright laws, otherwise investment would flee.
The UK said no… and AI companies are investing anyway.
My piece in today’s @Telegraph on why Open AI’s new investment in London should put the copyright opt-out debate to bed.

Delighted to sign this letter urging @UniofNottingham to rethink plans to close @UoNMusic.

Strong IP protections are vital for tech companies, vital for creatives, and vital for innovation in general.
But you can't pick and choose - ignoring IP principles when it suits you, then invoking them when someone else comes to steal your lunch.
Thats not how it works, Sam.
OpenAI have every right to have their work and innovations protected by law.
But it's ludicrous for a company whose business model rests on taking the work of musicians, authors and artists without permission to complain about someone else stealing its output for training data…
OpenAI has warned US lawmakers that Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek is targeting the ChatGPT maker and the nation's leading AI companies to replicate models and use them for its own training, a memo seen by Reuters showed https://t.co/xxSfndc03p
Great to meet the All Party Parliamentary Group on Music Chair @alexsobel earlier to discuss @UniOfNottingham’s plans to scrap its Music Department.
Thank you Alex, it’s great to have your support for our campaign to save the @UoNMusic Dept! #ProtectUoNMusic
If you have 100 vinyl LPs in your record collection or a similar number of CDs - you as an individual will have spent as much in real terms on music as Suno - which has scrapped almost every piece of human created music on the internet
I was incredibly fortunate to work with @tom_watson during my time at @UK_Music.
He’s been a brilliant Chair and I’m privileged to call him a mentor and a friend.
The industry owes him a great debt for the energy, wisdom & commitment he brought to the role.
Big shoes to fill!
After serving two terms and six years, UK Music Chair Lord @tom_watson will step down from the role in 2026. His leadership has been invaluable and we thank him for his incredible work during this time. Read tributes from UK Music and its members here: https://t.co/43UQIGY7dD
Interesting that at a time when senior politicians often struggle to show “the real them”, @MichaelBerkele2 has coaxed out a more human and personal side of the PM than any other interviewer seems to have managed.
Perhaps politicians should speak about their music tastes more!
This is a really lovely interview with Keir Starmer. It’s great to have such warm words about the value of music and music education from the PM - but also very moving to hear how important music has been to him and his family, and how genuinely passionate he is about it.
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is our guest on this week's Private Passions.
Sir Keir Starmer talks to Michael Berkeley about his early musical life as a violinist and flautist, politics and the nation, as well as his love of the music of Beethoven, Mozart, Shostakovich and Brahms. Listen at 12pm this Sunday or afterwards on BBC Sounds.
Wonderful celebration of musical theatre at tonight’s Magic at the Musicals - brilliant performances all round, and incredible playing from the @lmto_official.
Very inspiring!! 🎶💃🎤
I recently wrote for @thetimes about the growing issue of “AI slop” and how streaming platforms needed to do more to tackle it - read my article here

The massive wave of AI-generated music flooding streaming platforms is bad for both creators and for consumers. So it’s great to see Spotify taking action on this.
More to do, but a good start!
I hear from artists all the time about their hopes and fears about AI and music. Today, Spotify’s rolling out new protections against spam, impersonation, and deception. We’re also embracing new industry standards for transparency so fans know what they’re listening to.

Great piece from @JonathanBadyal about the huge growth opportunities that India offers for the creative industries.
Well worth a read!

Such a special evening at the Last Night of the Proms yesterday - a perfectly judged programme that celebrated music new and old, and was incredibly uplifting and inspiring.
Huge congrats to @classicjacko and the whole @bbcproms team for a really exceptional season!
