Rakim joined J.PERIOD for “The Live Mixtape: God MC Edition,” a performance series built around live remixes, classic verses and recognizable instrumentals from different eras of hip-hop. 👀

For this section, J.PERIOD paired Rakim’s verse from “The Watcher 2” with the instrumental from Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s “Still D.R.E.,” bringing together two records released three years apart.

“The Watcher 2” originally appeared on JAY-Z’s 2002 album, “The Blueprint 2: The Gift & The Curse.” The track featured JAY-Z, Dr. Dre, Rakim and Truth Hurts, with Rakim delivering its final verse.

“Still D.R.E.” was released in 1999 as the lead single from Dr. Dre’s album “2001.” The track was produced by Dr. Dre and Mel-Man, while JAY-Z received a writing credit for the lyrics.

That connection made the live remix especially fitting. Rakim’s verse originally appeared on a record featuring both JAY-Z and Dr. Dre, while the “Still D.R.E.” instrumental was also connected to both artists through its production, performance and writing credits.

The performance also showed how naturally Rakim’s cadence could adapt to a completely different instrumental. 💯
