These mortars can deliver a heavy volume of fire to an objective in a very short period. Mortar fire is especially effective against exposed infantry and can also be used to neutralize fortified positions or force armoured units to withdraw.
The Mortar Fire Controller (MFC), typically an NCO, directs the fire of each mortar section from a position near the troops they are supporting. They communicate target locations and make adjustments to ensure accurate fire.
Mortar fire is an effective method for suppressing enemy positions, allowing assaulting troops to advance within a range of 200-300 meters. Once in position, the mortar fire shifts to target enemy counterattack and supporting positions, providing cover for the assault.
The 81mm Mortar is also capable of deploying smoke rounds to obscure visibility and illuminating rounds to light up the battlefield at night.
This tactical use of mortar fire plays a crucial role in supporting ground offensives and maximizing the effectiveness of assaulting troops. It is a key element in modern warfare strategies.
