What a find yesterday - Trewhiddle strap-end in silver, 9th century. Found by a metal detectorist in our group, as its silver it will be declared as treasure. Once that process is complete we'll be donating it to the museum. Our first from this period. Delighted ๐ @findsorguk
@rosenbergchud@Littoria14 Its insane that you even need to point out this obvious fact. How many tens of thousands of Italian prisoners taken when they faced the tiny British force in 1940/41? It was a humiliating defeat for Mussolini
@mayalab10@edouardhusson@clement_molin 100k+ French troops were taken off the beaches at Dunkirk...many decided to return to France soon after which is more the pity

@eastvillageguy 18 years ago my (now) wife and me booked a trip to the Killing Fields for maybe $10 each, as a 'bonus' they threw in a free AK47 with full clip to shoot into the jungle. Bear in mind this was immediately after seeing the mountain of skulls at the site
โThe situation in which these weapons were found may tempt us to refer them to a very remote period indeed; even beyond that of the present worldโ John Frere, on Hoxne, 1797
People always say that movies aren't documentaries and that "they know" that X or Y movie isn't perfectly historical.
The DAMAGE, that Braveheart has done to people's perception of the middle ages (and Scottish history) is still yet to be undone, 30 years later.
It's astonishing how much this movie shaped people's view on contemporary politics, ideology, fashion and warfare.
How about "Where is our heritage demonstrably most risk from metal detecting"? It isn't lost, it's part of the archaeological record.
