LIONS POSTGAME : Sophomore Tessa Russell had an interception return for a touchdown and a scoring reception, while senior Avery Olson added a touchdown catch and an interception to help spark the undefeated JSerra Girls Flag Football team to a 41-7 victory over the Santa Margarita Eagles in their Trinity League opener on Wednesday at Santa Margarita Catholic High School.

Russell spoke on her big defensive play to jump start the Lions 11th victory of the season and 39th straight win dating back to last season.

Olson detailed her spectacular first quarter scoring reception and helping to spearhead a stout defensive effort that limited the Eagles to seven points.

The JSerra Girls Flag Football team opened its quest for a third straight Trinity League title with a 41-7 victory over the Santa Margarita Eagles on Wednesday at Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita.

JSerra improves to 11-0 overall on the season and has now won 39 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Sophomore Tessa Russell helped put the Lions ahead 7-0 with 9:44 remaining in the opening quarter, as she stepped in front of an Eagles pass and returned the interception 50 yards for a touchdown.

JSerra increased its’ advantage to 14-0 with 6:11 left in the first quarter, as senior Avery Olson took a pass from sophomore quarterback Kate Meier over the middle and raced into the end zone for a 49-yard touchdown reception.

Santa Margarita cut the deficit in half with a touchdown with 8:05 remaining in the second quarter.

Meier gave the Lions a 20-7 lead with 3:30 remaining in the half with a four-yard touchdown run.

Olson came up with a big defensive play with less than 30 seconds remaining in the half, as she registered a flag pull inside the Lions’ five-yard line on fourth down to thwart an Eagles’ scoring chance.

Meier connected with sophomore Sterling Flores on a 24-yard touchdown reception with 8:29 left in the third quarter to boost the Lions advantage to 27-7.

Russell hauled in Meier’s third touchdown pass from 21 yards out with 10:34 remaining to increase the Lions lead to 34-7.

Freshman Kate Edgar was the recipient of Meier’s fourth touchdown pass from seven yards out with 6:00 remaining for the final points of the game.

Meier completed 26-of-39 passes for 288 yards.

Olson and fellow senior Stella Day also added interceptions for the Lions.

The JSerra Football team seeks its’ third straight victory on Thursday, as the Lions welcome the Oak Hills Bulldogs to JSerra Catholic High School for a nonleague battle.

The JSerra Girls Volleyball team and the Torrey Pines Falcons engaged in an exciting back-and-forth nonleague encounter on Tuesday at JSerra Catholic High School, with the Falcons prevailing over the Lions in five sets by scores of 25-21, 25-27, 25-8, 20-25, 15-5.

Senior Makayla Ziegler led the Lions with 20 kills and two blocks, while also adding 13 digs.

Senior Layla Graham supplied 10 kills.

Junior Madi Goodrich produced a team-leading 22 digs.

Senior Rochelle Dous had 14 digs and five kills, with fellow senior Riley Tsai recording 12 digs.

Junior Kendall Stark dished out a team-best 37 assists and accumulated 12 digs.

The undefeated JSerra Girls Tennis team improved to 5-0 on the season, as the Lions took down the Crean Lutheran Saints by a score of 16-2 in a nonleague match on Tuesday at JSerra Catholic High School.

The Lions enjoyed a strong day overall day of competition, winning eight of nine sets in both singles and doubles action.

Sophomore Paisley Crutchfield enjoyed a perfect day in singles competition, winning all three of her sets by a score of 6-0.

Junior Brookelyn Garcia also claimed three victories, as she posted wins of 6-0, 6-4, and 6-0.

Junior Isabella Geffre added dual triumphs of 6-1 and 6-1.

Senior Naomi Clarke and freshman Nina Yacko teamed together for wins of 6-0 and 6-0, with Clarke and junior Carissa Vu claiming a 6-1 win.

Juniors Milana Leffler and Ava Levitanus joined forces to seize victories of 6-1 and 6-2, with Leffler and sophomore Adrienne Landry posting a 6-0 win in their lone tandem set.

Freshman Kailyn Martin and sophomore Angela Li produced a win of 6-1, with Martin and sophomore Gretchen Warner also supplying a 6-1 triumph.

The JSerra Boys Water Polo team won its’ third straight road game to open the season on Tuesday, as the Lions defeated the Mira Costa Mustangs by a score of 9-5 in a nonleague clash at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach.

The teams were tied at 4-4 after the first period, but JSerra’s defense tightened impressively and held Mira Costa to one goal over the final three periods to help the Lions pull away for the victory.

Sophomore Sasha Bjelica tallied three goals and dished out three assists to pace the Lions’ offensive attack.

Senior Joe Wraith and junior Ronan Keane each added two goals apiece.

Juniors Dylan Park and Cal Ulicny also found the back of the net for individual goals for the Lions.

Park also recorded a team-high three steals, while Bjelica added two steals.

Junior goalie Stefan Vukojevic recorded seven saves for the Lions.

The JSerra Girls Volleyball team enjoyed a successful close to the final day of competition at the 2026 Dave Mohs Tournament on Saturday, as the Lions claimed the top spot in the Division 1 Silver Bracket at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach.

JSerra began the day with a 25-19, 18-25, 15-11 victory over Harbor High School of Santa Cruz.

Senior Makayla Ziegler sparked the Lions’ attack with a team-high 20 kills, 13 digs, and two blocks.

Junior Kendall Stark dished out a team-leading 31 assists.

Junior Madi Goodrich supplied a team-best 15 digs, with senior Rochelle Dous adding 11 digs.

The Lions battled Chaparral High of Temecula in their second match, sweeping the Pumas by scores of 25-19 and 25-16.

Ziegler had 11 kills and eight digs in the match, while junior Cassie Bartholomew added five kills.

Stark had team-highs in both assists (21) and digs (11).

Junior Amelia Streech supplied six digs.

JSerra locked horns with the San Juan Hills Stallions for the third time in the last four days in their final match of the tournament, with the Lions getting the better of their city neighbors by scores of 25-22 and 25-22.

Ziegler paced JSerra with six kills.

Senior Layla Graham added five kills and a team-high three blocks.

Stark produced 15 of the team’s 16 assists in the match.

Senior Riley Tsai accumulated a team-best seven digs, with Goodrich and Dous each recording six digs.

LIONS POSTGAME: The JSerra Football team posted its second straight victory on Friday, as the Lions topped the Crean Lutheran Saints 37-29 in a nonleague battle at Crean Lutheran High School in Irvine.

Lions Head Football Coach Hardy Nickerson provided his insights on a resilient overall team performance, the offensive line and senior running back Will Fredericksen controlling the action in the second half to help put the Lions into the win column, and continuing to build momentum with Oak Hills next on the schedule.

The JSerra Football team made it back-to-back victories on Friday, as the Lions outlasted the Crean Lutheran Saints 37-29 in a spirited nonleague clash at Crean Lutheran High School in Irvine.

The Saints took the opening kickoff and drove down for the game’s first touchdown, but the Lions responded immediately on their first drive of the night.

Senior Will Fredericksen found a seam down the left sideline and burst into the end zone for a 21-yard rushing score to tie the game at 7-7.

Fredericksen put the Lions ahead 14-7 with 8:00 remaining in the second quarter, powering into the end zone from a yard out on 4th-and-goal.

JSerra increased the advantage to 21-7 with 3:56 left in the half, as senior quarterback Hayes Cloutier scrambled to his left and hit junior wide receiver Sam Fredericksen in the end zone for a five-yard scoring reception.

The Saints narrowed the deficit with a touchdown with 0:57 seconds remaining before halftime, but Cloutier and senior Clark Cokley (who had eight receptions in the first half) led the Lions into field goal range and senior Evan Leddy connected on a 37-yard attempt to give JSerra a 24-14 halftime advantage.

Cloutier and Sam Fredericksen dialed up their second scoring connection with 7:11 left in the third quarter with Fredericksen hauling in a 24-yard pass in the end zone to give the Lions a 30-14 lead.

The Saints cut the deficit to eight points with a touchdown with 10:18 remaining in the game.

JSerra faced 4th and 8 on the Saints’ 31-yard line on their ensuing drive.

Cloutier scrambled through the line, found a massive hole in the middle of the field, and scampered into the end zone to give the Lions a 37-22 lead with under seven minutes remaining.

Crean Lutheran narrowed the gap again to eight points with a touchdown with 2:34 left.

But Will Fredericksen punctuated a 100-yard night on the ground with two strong rushing first down to seal the victory.

The undefeated JSerra Girls Tennis team put forth another dominant road showing on Thursday, as the Lions took down the Calabasas Coyotes by a score of 16-2 in a nonleague match at Calabasas High School.

The Lions are now 4-0 and have outscored their opposition by a combined score of 58-14.

A complete sweep of doubles action helped ignite JSerra’s triumphant showing.

Freshman Brooklyn Peterson and junior Brookelyn Garcia were victorious by scores of 6-4 and 6-2 in their two sets of court action, with Peterson also teaming with sophomore Adrienne Landry for a 6-3 win.

Senior Naomi Clarke and junior Milana Leffler joined forces for triumphs of 6-3 and 6-0, with Clarke and sophomore Gretchen Warner earning a 6-1 win.

The JSerra Boys Water Polo team made it back-to-back road wins to open the season, as the Lions rallied past Oaks Christian by a score of 8-7 in a nonleague contest at Oaks Chrisian School in Westlake Village.

The Lions trailed 5-4 in the third period, but junior Lars Knepper, sophomore Sasha Bjelica, and junior Dylan Park each found the back of the net for goals to stake JSerra to a 7-5 lead with under five minutes remaining in the game.

Oaks Christian tallied two straight goals in less than two minutes to tie the contest at 7-7.

Park supplied the game-winner with 1:44 left in regulation, as he received a pass from junior Cal Ulicny in the front of the cage and powered a shot amidst heavy traffic into the goal.

Park, Bjelica, and junior Ronan Keane each scored two goals apiece.

Ulicny also added a goal in the game.
