In the late 1960s & 1970s, Israel's solution to Palestinians who opposed military occupation was deportation.

Israel deported educators, journalists, politicians, students and professionals.

They deported people for purported allegiances to Jordan, public opposition to Israeli occupation or public support for the PLO.

Israel deported school principals and supervisors who protested censorship of textbooks, teachers and students who initiated school strikes, attorneys who organized strikes.

Israel deported the mayor of Ramallah, Nadim Zaru, for protesting against the demolition of a Palestinian house, while other mayors were deported for crimes committed by their constituents.

The goal was to decapitate the Palestinian society to ensure acquiescence to Israel’s apartheid system.

We speak with Dr. Adam Hamawy, the former U.S. Army combat surgeon who just won the Democratic nomination in New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District. He is now the heavy favorite to win the Democratic-leaning district in November and, if elected, would become New Jersey’s first Muslim member of Congress. Hamawy is an outspoken advocate for Palestinian rights.

“I was running on something very simple: that we should be spending on healthcare, not bombs,” Hamawy tells Democracy Now!, criticizing the $1 trillion Pentagon budget. “We need to be spending some of that right here at home to restore our nation, to fund universal healthcare like Medicare for All, to fund tuition-free public college, to rebuild our roads and bridges, to address the housing crisis.”

Israeli soldiers went door to door in the border village of Ain Arab, forcing residents from their homes at gunpoint, journalist Lylla Younes reports in her latest Drop Site investigation.

The forced expulsion of Ain Arab was a striking example of the Israeli military’s campaign to ethnically cleanse villages across southern Lebanon, with an estimated 60 villages completely destroyed south of the “Yellow Line” Israel declared on April 19, barring residents from ever returning.

Younes said it is emblematic of what Israel is doing across the south:

“There isn’t any sort of discernible calculus here besides mass destruction and mass instability really and mass punishment of a people.”

Israeli forces detained five Palestinian women this week, including two members of the Palestinian women's national football team and three university students, during raids and detention campaigns across the occupied West Bank.

Families said the women were detained without clear explanations, with Israeli authorities telling relatives that the reasons would be addressed in court.

Among those detained were footballers Natalie Abu Diya and Rand Halawani, as well as Birzeit University students Sama Safi and Julan Abu Awad.
