Like many others, I'm leaving this site.
If X was invented today in its current form, I wouldn't even consider lending it my patronage. The amount of good faith engagement is vanishingly rare, and the algorithm pumps conflict and despair.
I'm off to Bluesky for cleaner air.
@gifford_head Such a clear example of how quickly the civil justice system has been absolutely eviscerated, left with the barest shell of a functioning system that is still being savaged by further cuts under the robotic mantra of 'Reform'.
@kerry_underwood Absolutely remarkable. Perhaps the purest illustration of the rift between what goes on in the Rolls Building vs the threadbare work propping up justice in the County Court.
Lancaster Castle self-proclaims as one of England's oldest continuously sitting Crown Courts (currently under renovation). The 1798 oak-paneled dock features the original branding iron used on malefactors. The courtroom and trapdoor leading to the holding cells are still in use.
@ijsimo25 @doctorlomas As far as I'm aware, the MOJ doesn't even own it. I think L&G bought it and 70% of the building is leased by HMCTS for court use(!)
@gifford_head @doctorlomas I sat in the President's courtroom in the Queen's Building for a SCT blitz list last summer. It was positively vertiginous sitting so high up. Tricky to see which part of the roundabout anyone was pointing at...
@gifford_head @doctorlomas True, although that's fair enough after 140 years. Rolls Building would basically be sawdust if it lasted an equivalent period.
@JohnHyde1982 More than ever, small claims in the county court are a sole point of democratic redress and accountability for citizens, and yet they are being driven out by delays and ratcheting fees, as though it were an inconvenience rather than an intrinsic facet of a vibrant democracy.
@kirkkorner As well as the requisite staffing. The current freeze means even long term sickness absence, maternity etc are not covered for ushers, making courtrooms unsafe and unviable. It's an absolute disgrace.
