I’ve spent this week tracking down the final days of my grandfather (“Papa Tom”) as part of a journalism project for @SMPAGWU! From Florida to Louisiana, my dad and I have followed Tom’s journal entries, sharing moments with Tom, 40 years after his death.

Every day was the same. Wake up. Sit in bed. Open my laptop. Stare at a Zoom screen until my focus blurs and my mind wanders. And repeat. Over and over for a year and a half.

Tom died in 1980 in Louisiana, but his body wasn’t found until 1981. His death has been a mystery to my family. Earlier this year, we found Tom’s journal from the last year of his life, and we are now piecing together exactly what happened during the last year of his life.

Tom ran away from home at 17 and joined the 82nd Airborne, deploying to Vietnam. He returned from the war with PTSD and substance abuse issues. Although he fell in love with my Grandma — my dad was born in 1972 — Tom’s mental health issues worsened.
