Uber hit with second largest fine since GDPR was introduced (after Google).
The important thing about this isn't the money though, it's that they are being fined for automated robo-firings of drivers, something that Uber continues to do on a daily basis. Could be a watershed.
@Jolly_St_Lewis Unfortunately, much of that campaign was an effort to criminalise 100,000 private hire workers while letting big business platforms like Uber off the hook. I fought for worker rights instead.
This is how it starts. The apps have ravaged rank business causing under utilised ranks. Then councils, cheered on by big-platform, harass workers marooned on the ranks before slowly dismantling ranking infra. Fight back!
@BENALIBrahim20@TfLTPH But look at paragraph 126 and 127 in the recent licensing decision. Uber incorrectly told TfL that there was human review over deactivation decision. Now we know that is incorrect. https://t.co/FLVumj7PQs
Uber have just scored the second biggest GDPR fine ever recorded in Europe for wrongful use of automated decision making for the deactivation and suspension of drivers. @Tfltph must act immediately to protect Uber drivers from violation of their rights. https://t.co/kZGIJ40Eke
This is dangerous & inappropriate. Drivers should be cautious in seeking "help" from police on trade issues & it is unethical for taxi cop to hold himself out as such. Drivers should join a union. Unions & Council must tell taxi cop to say in his domain.

@TootlestheTaxi It is already shared in NYC for exactly this purpose. The regulator checks driver working time by cross referencing data from all platforms. No need to stop multi apping. None of this is hard. See our Dying for Data report.
TfL has long falsely denied power to regulate bogus self employment of rogue operators like Uber, Bolt, Addison Lee & ranks of the LPHCA. Yet DVSA & Traffic Commissioner revoking licenses of hauliers because bogus self employment poses a safety risk. 1/ https://t.co/aEwYOhpuag
When are we going to see a public apology, and better yet, a resignation, from Met Police Commissioner Mark Rowley for his pile on before the death of Jason Arday. When is it ever OK for Met to publicly discuss sensitive requests for police help from victims?
Steven Methven from Novara is a good man. I hope every journalist that contributed an article to the public onslaught of Jason Arday is as unequivocal in their apology and thoughtful in their reflection as him.
This is terrible news. London's hard working taxi & minicab drivers are getting squeezed by dynamic pricing up stream AND down stream. Uber et al are using dynamic pay to cut driver pay and boost their profits. Meanwhile fleet operators jack up vehicle costs with dynamic rents!
I’m hearing surge pricing on rentals from September to Xmas could be implemented by a certain fleet who is struggling to stay in the game … Is it the cab shortage that is driving this possibility or the heat ! Next it will be bidding for a hire cab on line ! What ever next ?
@guidoacasa I'm not sure you have grasped the point. Nobody's asking TfL to regulate pay. DVSA and the TC do not either. But they do need to understand act upon the causality between worker exploitation & misclassification and road safety risk.
