My wife Brenda and I had a wonderful time celebrating Diwali with Pittsburgh’s Indian community at today’s Diwali Mela in McKeesport. Thank you to our friends Sathya Venkatasubramanian and Preeti Paranjpe for the warm invitation and hospitality.

Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali celebrates light over darkness and hope over despair.

Pittsburgh’s Indian community contributes enormously to our education, medicine, technology, business and industry — while its traditions add tremendous cultural richness to our region.

Ending cash bail is not the same as reforming it.

Summer Lee wants cash bail eliminated entirely. She calls it a “barbaric relic” that punishes people for being poor.

James Hayes understands that being broke and being dangerous are not the same thing. It's not about jailing someone simply because they can't write a check. It's about not releasing someone who is a risk of violence, intimidation, flight, or repeat offense.

We had a great Coffee with the Candidate today. Chuck, a former miner, invited his regular Saturday coffee buddies to come and meet me.

We talked about the lack of representation they felt living in Mt. Washington and some of the challenges facing the region.

Everyone took a yard sign and said they will definitely be voting for me in November. They encourage everyone else to do the same!

Summer Lee’s education plan starts with more money — a "fairer formula" and higher teacher pay.

Pennsylvania already spends among the most per student in the country - yet nearly 70% of eighth graders still are not proficient in reading or math.

Families have noticed. Only about 74% of Pennsylvania kids sit in their assigned district school. The rest are in charter, private, homeschool, or career programs. In Pittsburgh, the district’s own report shows enrollment down 23% in a decade, and more city kids now in charter or private school.

Funding without results is not an education plan. James Hayes will expand school choice and measure what really matters - whether students can actually read and perform once they graduate.

Summer Lee's Green New Deal promises a jobs guarantee and training so fossil-fuel workers can “thrive” in a 100% renewable economy.

Southwestern Pennsylvania already ran that experiment back in 2017.

A federal ARC program enrolled 172 coal workers to retrain for IT jobs. How did that work out?

➡ Only 34 graduated.
➡ Only 52 got an IT-related job.
➡ About $51,000 in project money per placement — and the audit never showed those jobs paid what the mines paid, or lasted.

James Hayes understands that a certificate doesn't equate to a paycheck. He will work to grow the jobs - including energy and manufacturing jobs that are built into the history of this region.

Summer Lee says the “best way” to make a community safer is poverty programs, mental health, housing, and wraparound services.

That is what you tell the offender.

It is not what you tell the victim of a serious crime.

A community member that already got robbed, beaten, or shot does not need a five-year plan. They need the person who did it taken off the street — tonight.

James Hayes supports law enforcement. Police. Courts. Detention. Real consequences. Prevention is certainly something that needs to be included - but, it should not be treated as a substitute for public safety.
