The £110bn we spend on debt interest every year is very much on my mind. The legacy of Conservative governments increasing debt in normal economic times is one that lives on. We've increased taxes in recent budgets to help cover the costs & fund public services, but we have to bring debt interest costs down and the long-term sustainable way to do so will be to increase UK productivity. Worth noting that the UK deficit has fallen by c. 1% of GDP over the last year, it is on course for the fastest reduction in any G7 economy, and is lower than the G7 average now - something never achieved under the Tories.

Today’s announcement on business rates is the third unfunded commitment Andy Burnham has announced in as many days.

It’s clear he hasn’t learned from the mistakes of Starmer and Reeves - he’s come into office without a proper plan.

The measures announced today are also a drop in the ocean compared to the vast increases in the business rates burden since Labour came to office.

The sustainable way to get the tax burden down, including on business, is to control public spending especially the benefits bill.

That is what the @Conservatives will do - and how we will fund proper relief for our high streets, abolishing business rates altogether for thousands of pubs, shops and restaurants.

Inflation remaining above target at 2.6% is deeply concerning for families.

Labours tax hikes and reckless borrowing stoked inflation, and Andy Burnham has already made billions of pounds of spending commitments without any plan to pay for them.

Andy Burnham will tomorrow announce a significant package of cuts to energy bills as he seeks to ease the cost of living crisis

The prime minister’s team has been considering several options for cutting bills, including scrapping 5% VAT on energy bills, a move that would save households £86 a year, and removing green levies, which would save £42 a year

It sounds like they’re going relatively big - they want to have an impact and make good on Burnham’s pledge to give people more ‘breathing space’

As well as cutting energy bills he is understood to be preparing reinstating the £2 cap on bus fares after it was increased to £3 by the last government. Britons make 3.7 billion bus journeys each year

An announcement on that is also imminent, although not expected tomorrow
