Happy to share that a few months ago, I profiled Conrad Ricamora for @vogueph. We talked about his return to the Philippines, his career highlights, and his loving marriage with Peter Wesley Ricamora-Jensen. Made me believe in love and theater again. https://t.co/rSjblHYhiA
This isn't unique to the Philippines. It isn't even unique to theater. But the reason it's particularly noticeable is because we have some of the best actors, singers, and dancers in the world. Some of them have even trained extensively. It's sad to see that sidelined.
Philippine theater has always had a problem with stunt casting and it's symptomatic of an entertainment world that avoids risk and underinvests in developing talent and new work, a problem made worse by the lack of government support for the arts.
Had a big crush on Jeff Moses since UNDER A PIAYA MOON. He’s a great actor and performer. Incredibly charming. So much enthusiasm. Looking forward to everything he’s in.
Sparkle star Jeff Moses says he was shocked after snagging Romer role in 'Bongga Ka, 'Day! The Annie Batungbakal Musical' out of 400 auditionees:
"I was genuinely surprised and grateful when I found out I got the role. I'm really happy to have the opportunity to portray Romer, and it's an honor to share this journey alongside Sam Concepcion and Anthony Rosaldo. Ever since I did Bagets: The Musical, I think I got bitten by the theater bug. I really fell in love with the craft, and ever since then, I've wanted to do more musicals. When I heard about the auditions for this production, I immediately told my handler that I wanted to audition."

Aubrey Plaza revealed that while filming, Nick Offerman reminded her she could get her own coffee instead of asking a production assistant.
Aubrey Plaza: I remember I was just sitting in my little chair and wasn’t doing anything for a while. One of the PAs came up and said, “Do you need anything?” I was like, “Uh, sure. I’d take a coffee,” or something.
Then Nick was sitting next to me reading a book or something, and he looked over and said, “Don’t forget that you can get up and get your own coffee. It’s right over there.”
Amy Poehler: (laughs)
Aubrey Plaza: I know that sounds kind of like an asshole thing to say, but I didn’t take it like that. I was like, “You’re fucking right.”
Amy Poehler: Yeah.
Aubrey Plaza: I was like, “I don’t need that little PA over there to walk over there, in my eyesight, and pour me a cup of coffee.” You get in that zone on set where you just turn into a couch potato, where you’re like, “Uh…”
Learned about Tony Rayns passing because folks shared an IG post of mine from 2017. Episode 19 of British docu series Visions was on the Philippines. It was uploaded for a time in YT and later taken down. Aired in 1983, towards the end of Marcos military rule. RIP.
you can be doing this job for 10+ years and email reps months ahead and STILL be shut out of all the press opportunities…like I should be used to this but I’m just tired…..
Tony Rayns was part of a documentary about Philippine Cinema. While Lino Brocka was still alive. Same year Ninoy Aquino was shot. His decision to champion Philippine cinema has done wonders to the world and to our country. He will be deeply missed.
Tony Rayns is why we know who Apichatpong Weerasethakul is! He did the original subtitles for most of the Wong Kar-wai movies we love! He is so important to korean cinema that there is a documentary about it!

Super happy there are so many great actors in the recent slate of Cinemalaya films. I'm stoked to see them have good material outside of the mainstream slop. But part of me also wishes we had more fresh faces/non-actors in independent Filipino films again! I miss the discovery!
@beeyonceknight Hi! CCP has an archive of Cinemalaya & Gawad Alternatibo films, which they've been digitizing over time.
Some titles are on the CCP Channel (compared to Juanflix, it has theater, music, & dance productions as well as films). Subscription is P99 a month.
