BREAKING: Donald Trump's week kicks off with nightmare news as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer demands an immediate investigation into the disastrous cuts to the National Weather Service that resulted in mass deaths during the Texas flash flooding.

We all know exactly who is to blame here...

In a letter to the Commerce Department’s Acting Inspector General Roderick Anderson, Schumer requested that he "open an investigation into the scope, breadth, and ramifications of whether staffing shortages at key local National Weather Service (NWS) stations contributed to the catastrophic loss of life and property during the deadly flooding.”

Schumer pointed to reporting from The New York Times which revealed that crucial forecasting and coordination jobs at the San Antonio and San Angelo National Weather Service offices were vacant when the flooding hit last Friday — almost certainly a direct result of cuts pushed through by Trump and Elon Musk's DOGE initiative.

Roughly 560 workers were fired from the NWS earlier this year as a result of the MAGA gutting of our government. Critical funding was slashed in order to pave the way for more billionaire tax cuts.

Predictably, Trump is refusing to take responsibility for the deaths, claiming that the flooding was a "once-in-a-100-years" event. Even if that were the case — and it's worth noting that "once-a-100-years" events are going to happen more frequently now because of climate change — the flooding likely could have been predicted with adequate staffing.

Among the vacant positions in San Antonio and San Angelo were the warning coordination meteorologist, a science officer, a senior hydrologist, as well as additional "vital forecasting, meteorology and coordination roles." Had these positions been filled it's quite possible that the flash flooding could have been predicted with enough time to evacuate endangered areas and save lives.

"These are the experts responsible for modeling storm impacts, monitoring rising water levels, issuing flood warnings, and coordinating directly with local emergency managers about when to warn the public and issue evacuation orders," wrote Schumer. "To put it plainly: they help save lives."

At least 82 people are dead. The flooding in Kerry County alone devastated an all-girls Christian summer camp, killing at least 27 people. Schumer suspects that the reduced NWS staffing caused a breakdown in coordination with local emergency authorities.

"This is a national tragedy which people across the country are mourning. The American people deserve answers," he wrote.

Unless this investigation is carried out and Trump's cuts are reversed, tragedies like this one are going to happen over and over again. Republicans are dismantling every piece of this country and if they get their way, the rest of us will end up stuck in a devastated dystopia while the oligarchs ride off with all of our nation's wealth.

"This is a problem and you were saying a few moments ago that you can't take him literally. Shouldn't you take the President of the United States literally?" said Acosta. "Isn't that sort of a baseline expectation, that he should stick to the facts?"

"I think look in this particular instance — and I didn't see the exact language that he used in the Truth Social post — I don't think that he was saying that this individual crossed illegally," said Republican strategist Neil Chatterjee. "If he was, it was based on initial reporting that was incorrect that somebody had—"

"We can show it up on screen again," interjected Acosta. "I mean he's blaming Biden's 'open border' policy. He's talking about that on Truth Social."

"But does he tie it directly to this particular—" said a floundering Chatterjee.

Acosta then quoted directly from Trump's deranged Truth Social post—

"When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true," wrote Trump.

"The crime rate in our country is at a level that nobody has ever seen before," he went on. "Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department. The Trump Administration will fully support the City of New Orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil!

"What he is saying in that Truth Social post is false!" said Acosta. "That is false."

"He's not saying that this individual crossed the border illegally but there were four hundred people on the terrorist watch list that did," said Chatterjee.

"Of course but when there's an act of terrorism in this country the incoming president should tell the truth to the American people!" said Acosta. "I mean that is just, isn't that what the president should do?"

We couldn't agree more. It it utterly detestable that Donald Trump is exploiting a tragedy like this to push his unrelated, bigoted agenda. We must continue to push back on his lies no matter what.
