In 1997, I was under the bright lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium, facing world #2 Michael Chang in front of 24,000 screaming fans and millions watching on TV. I was the young Stanford grad with the "it factor," and for one set, I played the best tennis of my life.
In April 2007, I woke up dizzy. Not vertigo, just a fog so thick I couldn’t fixate on the ball. I "pounded the pancakes" thinking it was blood sugar, hid my condition from everyone at the courts, and got my ass kicked. That was the last professional match I ever played.
I cried three times in one month and that is how I knew it was over.
Three times in one month. That's how many times I broke down and cried. And that's how I knew my professional tennis career was coming to an end.
